What about the up coming Samsunf LED 56" ? Just wait and see

Edited. Nevermind. This thread has turned drama-tastic and I don't want to contribute to that. I think in the end we actually agree.

DRC 1 vs. DRC2.5

Someone please explain the difference and the importance of the difference between the two? I am trying to decide between the xbr1 and the A2000. I am leaning towards the xbr1, but need help!

Here is a TV console that I purchased for my new 55 " A2000. If you are looking for a solid, sharp looking, wood, console for a "decent price", check it out. My wife doesn't like the cold modern look of the silver/black stands that comes standard so I went on a worldwide search for a nice wood TV console. I really liked the BDI Avion consoles, but twice the price and the colors only comes in black or a light cherry. The wife says she needed a darker wood, but not black. Check it out if you are interested.

The only thing that kinda worries me is that according to Sonystyle, the foot print of the base is 20.2" in depth. Should I be worried that the TV might fall? Can someone that owns 60 A2000 please confirm the dimensions listed on Sonystyle, (WxHxD): 55.6" x 38.9" x 20.2"? I was assured by people that the TV will be fine, but I would hate to have the TV fall because it over hung by 0.2". Thanks.
I've seen that stand and thought that it looks really good...actually I may prefer the one with the curve metallic legs.
But... can one of the drawer be removed so that I can place my center channel there?

For the newbies out there watching all the analysis, and being a pleased owner of the 60A2000, I'm going to have to go with a quote from Joe Pantoliano in the Matrix......"Ignorance Is Bliss"

For the average person, the set looks stunning with a good signal. The more technically savvy folks on this forum are way above the average person when it comes to what they can see in picture quality.

Also folks have to remember, this is not the "Who loves the A2000? This guy!" forum.

You may love your mom's cooking, but you don't want Chef Gordon Ramsey to come over and tell you that its F**kin' Pig Slop! You get the picture....

My advice to new owners...do not go on these forums any more. Either:

1) you'll get pissed off after defects or inferior quality is discovered, or
2) you'll get pissed off because someone else got the same set cheaper.

Leave well enough alone and enjoy your TV.

I believe Foo posted it before at about 18" and that was the measurement I used to search for a console. When I put the order in for a console that was 20" in depth I looked at the spec sheet for the A2000 and they listed it at 20.2". I just wanted to make sure once again and wanted other opinions about hanging the base of the tv off the console, even if it only is less than 1".

Well, as an A2000 owner, I must admit that after reading UMR’s critical review last evening I suffered a case of temporary buyer’s remorse. I want to thank him, however, for taking the time to report his expert findings. After reading it I went in and watched again a few HD recordings from my DVR and was as impressed with what I saw as ever. I guess being a video laymen has it’s advantages as I haven’t yet learned what defects to look for.

I normally take “specs” very seriously as it’s part of my job in IT to select and implement very complex and expensive systems so it’s not easy for me to accept a TV which I now know has the technical shortcomings mentioned. I’m getting over it though because essentially evaluating AV equipment, as has been pointed out in this thread, is very subjective based on what looks and sounds good to the individual. In the end my A2000 still renders what I consider a beautifully clear and detailed picture at 9’ when feed a good HD source or even an upconverted DVD. I do not have any green or red anomalies on the active screen or black screen.

I’ll be honest with you, if I had read UMR’s posting prior to buying I probably would have held off. But having this set in my home for the last few days convinces me that for the money it was the right choice. I look more for the top value than the absolute best performing product. If I’m not happy in six months with the picture for any reason than maybe I’ll invest in a professional calibration otherwise I’m good where I am.

Edit: One thing that helps is that I'm coming from a 36" 5 year old SDTV.

umr, how much less resolution does the A2000 have at 720p/1080i?

I assume that since this is a custom place, you could probably request a change. Don't see it as a problem. Call and ask (877) 325-9663 to confirm.

I am very sensitive to rainbows. A proper calibration of the HLS will reduce the rainbow effect, but at the expense of light output. Doing this also reduces the rainbow phenomena dramatically, but not completely. All of these things are a set of tradeoffs. The A2000 may be the best for you. I tolerate the rainbows in exchange for low noise, excellent color performance and a better form factor.

The vertical single pixel burst patterns did not exist. Looking at the sharpness pattern I would put it at about 1/2 the horizontal resolution it should have and all of the vertical resolution without service mode tweaking. With the tweaks it had the full 720p and 1080i resolution you would expect.

Wouldn't that be worse than 480p then?

Just going through some of your prior posts, umr, and had an additional question regarding your below comment.

Do you think one of the ways that the color uniformity issue could manifest itself is as this faint red haze that I mentioned I was seeing in the lower left hand corner of the set?

Thanks.

That is exactly what color uniformity looks like. Put a gray raster up of varying intensity and you will see it.

No. The 480 in 480P refers to the vertical resolution. He stated that it had all the vertical resolution, ie it can display 1080 lines vertically without issue. What is half is the the horizontal resolution, the 1920 part of "1920 by 1080". So, without the tweaks he did, it was essentially doing 960 x 1080. Though this is just the perceived resolution due to all the filtering being done.

I dunno (don't think any of us really know), but the xbr1 has v2.0, which is being retired, presumably because of problems. In any event, this has been discussed TO DEATH. Read the thread.

My sentiments exactly.....although i'm stepping up from a 60 inch 2.5 yr old HD LCD projection zenith.....and it's a huge step up as far as i'm concerned....

Would you buy a dishwasher that had 6" wings on each side, and didn't wash dishes any better, just had a marginally improved rinse-aid dispenser?
It's not that I like the speakers as configured. I just don't dislike it enough to have had it influence my decision in any way on what TV to buy. If space had been an issue, I would probably cared more. In my case, the choice-driver was the amazing PQ.

Thanks for all of this insight, umr. Can you tell us in layman's terms what the IRE is in the grey scale plot chart? Also, am I correct to assume you would want the triangles to be in the center of the squares on the TriStimulus chart?

IRE corresponds to signal level. In this case it is equal to percent. You are correct about wanting the triangles in the squares.
