View Full Version : Mvix Wireless Hi-Definition Media Player (MX-760HD)
yodi_lusti 02-17-07, 12:59 PM Hi,
To you, current users: is the problem with image shifted to the left still present? Is there a way to solve that? Is it annoying?
Thank you all in advance.
lemonsoju 02-19-07, 03:25 AM I've read through all the posts here, trying to determine whether the MX-760HD is for me. Thanks to everyone for posting your experiences, it's helped a lot.
Can anyone who has the machine answer the following:
- MX-760HD can play a DVD from a USB DVD player. Does the MX-760HD obey the region code of the DVD player?
That is, if my DVD player is region 1 and I try to play a region 2 disk, will the MX-760HD:
A. complain and stop
B. use one of the 5 "change-region" attempts that DVD players have
C. simply ignore the region
- Secondly: same question, but accessing the DVD player by LAN. ie, Attach the DVD player by USB to a PC on the network and try playing different region disks from the MX-760HD.
On my PC, I use DVDRegionFree to get around the region limitation. Not sure whether that would successfuly make the DVD region free over the LAN.
I appreciate these are specialist questions, however the DVD playback is important to me for two reasons:
1. I have a new 720p projector and if I can use the MC-760HD to play the DVDs, then I don't need to buy a new upscaling DVD player.
2. I have many DVDs and I don't want to rip them to HDD.
I can speak Korean, so I'd like to direct this question to the Unicorn support team -- however it's Chinese New Year and Unicorn have a pop-up on their site saying, effectively, don't expect much from them this week. If anyone can test this out for me, I'd appreciate - because I'm itching to buy.
lemonsoju 02-19-07, 03:47 AM I've not seen this review mentioned here. It has very good pictures of the unit:

vixenreindeer 02-19-07, 09:48 AM Anyone know whether I can replace the internal wifi card with a WL-126GM
mimo mini pci card..
I emailed Mivix and they replied to all my previous emails but on this one they kept very quiet!! hmmm anti virus any thoughts since its linux all you might need is driver support right?
vixenreindeer 02-19-07, 09:50 AM Just went ahead and ordered that mini pci card anyways and will try it..
if not I am going to put it in my dell since I know it will work in that notebook..
nemster 02-19-07, 05:09 PM lemonsoju:
that should be no problem since you can just buy a $15 dvd drive and flash it code free on your pc, so then it should nicely play with the mvix.
i have some cheap as$ usb drive, if you insist i can test the region code issue at the end of the week.
i hope we manage to get some sort of homebrew firmware soon, since the current fw lacks of some stuff.
videojo11 02-19-07, 07:57 PM link with great patch firmware for 760hd
amd.co.at/anti/?hd-player/mx760/
lemonsoju 02-19-07, 08:16 PM nemster:
If there's any way you could test, I'd appreciate it. I'm in Japan and it's not easy finding a cheap flashable player here. Most of the cheap brands are local (and not so cheap actually), and there's no information in English about flashing them. In addition, Japanese don't tend to import DVDs, so there's no need for them to flash.
I'd also be interested to know whether DVD playback over wireless works or not, though it's not a deal breaker. The region code is more important.
Thanks.
antivirus 02-20-07, 03:22 AM hi video.jo
i do only a telnet in this 1.15 firmware ( http://amd.co.at/anti/hd-player/mx760/intern ) and i work now on gftp.. and samba
regards :-)
nemster 02-20-07, 04:14 AM ok, ill test it at the end of the week since i have some exams now.

I don't recall any sort of slot inside, mini-PCI or other. The specs on the unit say "Wireless LAN : 802.11b/g or Pre-N MIMO(option)" which makes it sound like an add-on is needed, but it could also mean the chipset in the 760 is capable of N, but they simply haven't spent the time to make that work yet.

I can plug it into a Toshiba 32" via HDMI and let you know.
yodi_lusti 02-20-07, 04:36 PM That would be great! I plan on using HDMI, also on a 32" TV (panasonic). Please, go ahead!
But do you imply that the problem is only with HDMI, and if so, what are you using as an output? Or don't you use your box anymore?
Thanks!
maltice 02-20-07, 05:08 PM Has anyone some info for my question? It would be much appreciated...
I can confirm that this is still the case... When i DVI out to my HDMI switcher, the image is off center. I emailed MVIX about it the week before the latest firmware came out (1.17 or whatever it is, and of course it didn't fix it) and they said:
Nathan,
Thank you for your email. This is an issue we are aware of, and are trying to resolve. Hopefully, the next firmware update will solve this.
If you have any other problems, let us know.
Thanks!

maltice 02-20-07, 05:10 PM oh, and yes, it is really annoying.. I couldn't use it.. Currently I am using component out instead of DVI... its strange if you watcha film and the titles are suppose to be centered but instead they are three inches to the left.... heh

How much off center is the image? Can you shift the image using the controls on your TV?
Is it the full image which is off center, or just the subtitles?
I also plan on using the digital output (since it's the only way to get 1080p), so this is a concern to me also.

I have also sent email to eunicorn asking for clarification on this option, but it's still the Chinese New Year so no reply yet.
MIMO and N is directional, I believe, hence multiple antennas on the router.
Not sure what difference it makes to the receiver.

Thank you. Good luck with the exams.

the comparable mimo asus pci card only requires two connections and can be used in a notebook mini pci card slot therefore the existing cabling in the 760hd should be ok the router is the device doing all the work! :)
I have gone from 801b to 801g and now mimo also i asked around and others have used this card and it does not require a diferent number of antenni..
they have used it in notebooks though..
and I consider the 760hd just a linux pc similar to a notebook just different packaging! :) I still hope its possible !
lemonsoju 02-20-07, 11:47 PM vixenreindeer:
is the driver required for the MIMO card the same as the one required for the existing g card?
if not, it's probable the 760 doesn't have the driver loaded

Well heck, I'll eat crow for that one.
Now if it works, I guess I'll eat my hat. Not to be a pessimist, but for it to work, the kernel would have to support it. Unless by some stroke of luck you nail the same card they were planning to use for N support, and they already have support for that N card in the kernel.....
Hat at the ready... lead on...

Sorry.... delayed. Hard to nab the TV from the wife when she isn't feeling too well.

Since they mentioned support for mimo and the asus card is the only card out that I know of and the fact that hey they won't respond to me after i mentioned that I was going to try this card :)
It made me wonder and since if it fails i'll just put it in my notebook!
Just thought i'd try it and stir them up a bit :)
Also I asked antivirus about it becuase he may know more about the linux end of things! but it will be here this weekend so i'll just try the mini pci card and if it works i'll want a pic of you eating that hat :)
j/k!
Got my 760HD two weeks ago. Did not get to use it immediately because the drive I wanted to use had stuff on I did not want to loose and then decided that I needed another one, which is also much bigger.
Had a few problems getting the HDD. Once I had the drive formatted and the files loaded tried it the pass weekend. Unfortunately, it could not see any of my files. Jumper setting was wrong. I don't know why the HDD manufactures don't put the jumper setting drawings in the same direction as the actual header (my mistake anyway).
And what's up with the ripoff of the amount of drive space. If I buy 250Gigs, why do they give you 250 trillion bytes, which is only 232Gigs? I have been in the elecricial engineering field for more than 10 years and I have never meant 1K as being 1000 bytes, but everyone knows it is 1024 bytes. Everyone in at least my field.
Anyway, I also found the remote slightly slow. Loved the OSD. I was a bit concerned with my firmware version. It was 0.2.61108 (I think). Looked wrong to me, but after mailing Mvix, they put my worries to rest that it was correct. Actually found their responses funny in the broken English with a slight bit of sarcasm in the mix.
Told them that I have never experienced a product or software released with a version 0. They said, Ah, yes, it is after all possible… Anyway, upgraded to version 1.1.17 last night and was very worried that after the upgrade, which is painfully slow by the way (like watching paint dry), the unit said Bye…but never switched off.
It probably took 10 minutes before it actually switched off. Reading the manual about firmware upgrades is also scary. It says that if the unit is switched off before the upgrade is completed; it will render it useless (a large, pretty, expensive doorstopper). Is this true? I would have thought that they would have a fixed bootloader that never gets erased and then the application is erased and downloaded, which means that if the link breaks, the Bootloader starts again, but only allows the user to upgrade the firmware. None of this creepy stuff. This kept me very patient and I left it for very long before trying to switch it off, but when I pressed the power button, it still did not switch off so I just left it until it eventually switched off by itself (geezz…).
Anyway, no issues with the new firmware (yet).
Found some WMV files that would not play, but I am not stressing about this yet since I am not too interested in watching those. Did play everything else so far, but that’s not a lot yet, so my experience is still limited.
Also struggled to put my HDD in, because I did not follow instructions. First pull the IDE and power cables out of the way, put the HDD in, then plug the cables in. Forget about years of experience that tells you to put the cables in before you put the drive in else you will struggle to put it in afterward.
Is it possible to play a video in slow motion? I tried, but was unable to. DVD/VCR players allow you to pause then press FF/FB, which gives you slow motion.
That stand was such a disappointment. Could they not just have made the unit clip into it so that it becomes one physical unit once clipped in? Now it just sits in there. If it gets knocked, it will fly out of there and from wherever it is sitting and reach certain brokeness.
I still have a lot of playing to do and so little time. Will set up a network soon and see what happens.
Once MVix sorts out its NAS/NDAS I would like to get audio and video and sometimes audio only streamed around the house. I asked about the NAS feature again and they tell MAYBE next month. I hope it’s not much more than a month, because this was one of the reasons why I bought this unit.
What I would like to see is a device that only provides composite for example outputs and this can then be amplified at the speakers or plugged into a TV/display around the house using WIFI. Does anyone know of such a device at under US$50?
I am also very interested in modifying the code for other (personal) applications. I unfortunately know nothing of (uc)Linux and don't know where to start.
Anti, you seem to be the man around here where this is concerned. I downloaded the files and saved your instructions. There is one file I cannot get hold of. Its EM86xx_ARMutils_new_process.pdf. Where else can I get hold of this?
Another interesting option a colleague asked me about yesterday was whether once Mvix sorts out their NAS, it would be possible for them to cache a movie being streamed wirelessly on the internal HDD before it starts to play. This way (theoretically), when the bandwidth drops etc, there are no breaks in the video/audio. What do you guys think about this?
Squished Squirre 02-25-07, 02:46 AM Has anyone some info for my question? It would be much appreciated...
Way late, and others have already confirmed the same, but DVI out is still off center with 720P and 1080i output with 1.1.7. Mine is shifted to the right about 15% or so.
480P appears to be fine though.

OK, that is really odd... Yours is shifted to the left? Mine is right shifted with about 1.5" bar on the left.
Hey guys, first post, usual story - have just bought the 760HD, transfering all my files across as I type.
I actually bought it because of the wireless option, thinking I could transfer files across without hooking up the mega cable from the living room. I completely spazed and didn't realise you couldn't do this, but sounds like it will be able to soon so all good.
My question is about .evo files. I'm currently dl'ing a full 1080p movie, but its in .evo format.
Has anyone had any experience with viewing these? I'm guessing its a proprietry blueray format, but am hoping I can watch it through the 760.
cheers.

If it is EVO, that sounds like HD DVD instead of Blu-Ray.
I'm betting it will depend on the codec used. If the disc used H.264 or VC-1, then yer most likely out of luck. If it uses MPEG-2, then there is a chance.
Try dropping one of the big EVO files on VLC 8.6 and see if it plays. If it does, then use get info in VLC on the stream while it plays and see what codec it is using. If it is MPEG-2, then it *might* be possible to combine all the EVO files, and then use VLC to remultiplex into a standard MPEG2 transport stream. Highly theoretical, but I'm betting it would work. (using several of lesser-known features of VLC)
Even then, I've heard (but not confirmed) that the MVIX can only deal with MPEG2 up to 24Mbit/sec video data rate.
Edit: Well, it did work on an HD DVD that I had created. Combined the .EVO files, and then remuxed with VLC, but playback had a slight glitch every 10 seconds or so. Might should have tried just combining the files and renaming to .TS.

Yeah... freaky. I have a 3 inch blank bar on the right side of my screen. when I do 1080i and 720p.... my tv aint 1080p, so I couldn't test that one.
luisgdes 02-26-07, 06:45 PM Hey guys,
I’m from Portugal and it’s my first post.
As USB storage device the MX-760HD has worked fine until 12 February when I turned on the PC and windows found new hardware said it was looking for "cypress at2lp rc58". I've try 3 different HDs in 3 different PCs but in all the cases the "cypress at2lp rc58" driver was not found.
I’ve already tried the Mvix Knowledgebase suggestion but without no success :(
I guess they found the possible solution in the on web site titled Cypress at2lp rc42 but they were not talking about cypress at2lp rc58! Don’t know if the too issues have the same solution!
I had another troubleshooting before:
The LCD Screen displays "Loading..." and then the unit powers off
But I made a Factory Reset and it worked.
But it was precisely after that Factory Reset that the “cypress at2lp rc58” message started.
Can someone please help me out!
maltice 02-26-07, 07:21 PM EEK. Maybe someone knows more than me, but did you try re-upgrading firmware after a factory reset? (not sure if that would even be it, just a thought)
-maltice
luisgdes 02-26-07, 07:54 PM Yes Maltice,
I've already tried but get no success!
I've found this artical:
"...
Several manufacturers make an external hard drive, CD Rom drive, or other peripheral that comes in an external "box" utilizing chip produced by "Cypress."
The Cypress chip is an EPROM or PROM (programmable read-only memory) chip. If you experience a power surge, power failure, or just turn your external device off at the wrong moment, the PROM chip will lose its programming. Then, the external device won't work anymore.
Instead, you will see this prompt: "finding new hardware cypress at2lp rc42" prompt. This is how the unprogrammed external box identifies itself to your computer.
Unfortunately, your computer will not find an appropriate driver. So, your external device no longer functions.
Even worse, as far as I have been able to determine, the equipment manufacturers don't provide a "help" solution for this problem. Also, neither does Cypress, since their website refers everyone back to the equipment manufacturer.

Cypress At2LP RC58 Driver Error
Solution
On occasion, when connecting your Mvix to your computer, you may receive an error message stating that the computer needs a driver called "Cypress At2LP RC58." If this occurs, try the following:
Download and extract the file dbflash.exe on PC.
Go to the device manager and find the Cypress AT2LP.
Reinstall driver (Manually locate the driver, Select "Have Disk", browse to the location where you extracted that file).
Disconnect your Mvix-HD from your PC.
Run primer.exe (from c:\PH-1003 EE SW, or wherever it is stored).
Reboot your computer.
Reconnect the Mvix.
If that does not work, please refer to our jumper pin settings article.
I've tried everything and nothing works!
maltice 02-26-07, 08:02 PM DAMN. Well, hopfully someone on here has had that problem... IN the meantime you scould try opening a help ticket with Mvix and see what the tech guys say. They have been about 50% helpful to the people in this thread, and they do seem to respond quickly. Well, good luck man.
-maltice
Hi there - This is my first post.
I've been following this thread with considerable interest, and bought my 760HD last week. Then I did this:
I installed a 400GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K400 HDD into the player. I used WinXP to format the drive and it was working perfectly - several test videos played flawlessly. 30 minutes later I used my Linux box to reformat the drive to ext3 linux format so I could copy some videos from my work machine (linux) and bring them home.
I copied the files off the player at home (also linux), then reformatted back to NTFS using WindowsXP and now the player cannot see the HDD. I've tried everything - I've erased the MBR using the Hitachi Low Level Erase utility, I've tried FAT32 format, I've tried creating smaller partitions - nothing works. I've upgraded the firmware to 1.1.17, and I've performed a Factory Reset and a hardware reset.
I've tried the jumpers in every position, and I've tried taking the jumpers off completely. No luck. I can hear the disk spinning up and it does make encouraging noises that give me the impression that it is being accessed.
The only thing I haven't tried that I can think of is to try another HDD to verify that player can see a drive, but I don't have one that I can use...
As a USB harddrive the player works perfectly - it shows up as drive G:\ on my computer and I can copy and delete files with no trouble. It is only the player itself that cannot see the drive. I can use an external USB drive or a network connection with no difficulty, but I really want the internal drive!
Has anyone any suggestions? Is there something in the player that I could have altered by formatting it with ext3? I've also raised a ticket with Mvix, but I wanted to cover all my bases and see if anyone here can help...
Thanks
Owen
gregsmith 02-27-07, 07:07 AM I'm starting to get bored with dragging my 760hd up and down the stairs every time I have a new file to put on the internal hard drive.
I can't wait til they allow you to add files over the network. I'm surprised (correct me if I'm wrong) that you can't copy files from a usb drive plugged into the 760 to the internal drive. You can play from these drives, but not copy. This is a crucial function for me.
sixtyhurts 02-27-07, 05:42 PM I sadly sent my unit back for a refund... i loved it out of the box.. but it just can't seem to handle .ts files without a frame stutter or frame loss. That and the constant freezes when attempting to fast forward and the files in excess of 4gb not playing completely... perhaps I will reconsider purchase when these issues are ironed out. But by that time it will probably be time to buy a unit with a Sigma Designs EM8634 chip that can handle H.264 files.
If it is EVO, that sounds like HD DVD instead of Blu-Ray.
Edit: Well, it did work on an HD DVD that I had created. Combined the .EVO files, and then remuxed with VLC, but playback had a slight glitch every 10 seconds or so. Might should have tried just combining the files and renaming to .TS.
Hey thanks mate, I think you're right. Its probably HDDVD not BR. I think I'll cancel the dl though, even if I get it working, like you said, it will glitch trying to push all that data through.
Its a shame, its pretty much why I bought 760HD in the first place. I'll just stick to HD avi files for now.
thanks for you help though.
p.s. apart from that, I just hooked it up to my new 40" Sony X-Series lcd, and its looks great. have had no other problems and the instalation and setup was a piece of piss. (thats easy for the non aussies)
haxplore 02-28-07, 05:10 AM Hi, I have just recieved my 760hd. :)
Nice to see that antivirus and others are already hacking it. It would be great if we could create firmware releases (ie. pkg files), so users could update the fw without flashing via tftp. First we need to know what's in a pkg file exactly.
I collected some info from previous posts and had a look at the official firmwares, also checked out pkg files for similar devices (iamm35). The details:
0x0000 - 16 bytes: some id (MVIX 1.0 for the 760hd, CubeOnRomPkgV1 for the iamm35) right padded with zeros
0x0010 - 2 bytes: "01 01" always, however I do not know why
0x0012 - 4 bytes: "YY YY MM DD" the date of release (D7 07 02 0C = 2007 Feb 12)
0x0016 - 2 bytes: first byte is "10" for fw version 1.1.9, "0A" for 1.1.15 and "0D" for 1.1.17, any idea? second byte is 00
0x0018 - 4 bytes: version number (01 01 0F 00 = 1.1.15)
0x001C - 16 bytes: MD5 hash of the packed binary (0x006C - EOF)
0x002C - 4 bytes: file length of the extracted binary (update_temp.bin, or rompkg_pack_tmp.bin for the iamm35)
0x0030 - 60 bytes: zero filled
0x006C - EOF: the packed binary (gzip)
If you do not have such a tool already, I guess I can put something together that packs/unpacks romfs files to pkg format. The meaning and importance of the byte at 0x0016 should be clarified first though (build number maybe?).
I installed a 400GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K400 HDD into the player. Owen,
I had a very similar experience. Could use the drive as a Mass storage device on my desktop and laptop, but the firmware just did not recognize the drive when it was plugged into my Tv. Tried multiple jumper settings as well as no jumpers at all, just like you did.
I finally slowed down and thought about what I was doing. Then started all over again and remembering that in Mvix's knowledge base they state that the number 1 problem they have found is the jumper settings.
Anyway, I had a good look at the picture showing the jumper settings and realized that I had the thing upside down relative to the picture. Stupid mistake, but as soon as I set the drive to master as indicated by the drawing, the Mvix firmware recognized the drive. Made sure that the drive could still be seen as a mass storage device on XP.

haxplore 03-01-07, 04:11 AM My player came with fw version 1.1.15. I updated to the official 1.1.17 (with the pkg file). After that I tried to tftp a fw to the unit, and it got interesting. :)
First of all, the method I used to get the player into tftp mode is the following:
- switch off player
- press and hold down power btn
- then press and hold down ok and setup btns
- release the btns (releasing power btn first)
After that a message on the lcd says the ip address of the unit is 192.168.100.3 (and it actually is), and of course it could not find my pc on 192.168.1.16 (or .100.16 ;) for that matter)
I did not have enough time to figure out what ip address the pc should be, but I have found it curious that it is so much different from what I read about it so far. Anybody with the same issue?
Kind regars,
h
ps.:
Luckily, I could pack a new romfs into a pkg file, and update with the official method, however, I used the same date and version just to be safe.
haxplore 03-01-07, 05:17 AM I think I figured out why the two bytes at 0x0010 are "01 01"
There is a file in the romfs (/etc/firmware_hwcode) which contains 1.1 (firmware hardware code?)
Kind regards,
h

VERY interesting! So the procedure you described doesn't involve a factory reset, right? It just shows the private IP of the Mvix device. Do you think NAS function is around the corner? I can't wait to test it :D
@ Mvix FW developers, eventually reading
Come on, release the NAS function we're all waiting for!!!
haxplore 03-01-07, 01:57 PM Hi all,
When my player is in emergency update mode, it is looking for the tftp server on 192.168.100.2 (port 69). I have not tried to flash it this way yet, but sooner or later I will. :)
Is the ip addr (in tftp mode) of your player 192.168.100.3 too? Or am I alone? :D
Embedded stuff is all new to me, so I am learning as I go. Do not expect big changes from me. ;) Anyway, using the tips from Antivirus, I can telnet to it now. :)

I haven't done factory reset and my settings were not lost after the update, if that's what you mean. I simply repacked the modified romfs into a pkg file, copied it to the player, and run fw update using the gui (same as with official fw). Do you loose your settings when you do a tftp update? (Well, I just have to get my hands dirty. :)) I think that user settings are stored somewhere else in the flashrom, so they are not overwritten.
Next step is to setup a toolchain, rebuild busybox with more cmds, if possible. After that, more linux goodies can be added. I think other players with the same chipset have nas already, I will look at their fw. Antivirus is way ahead of me (and everybody) though. :D As he said, samba is already in, we may get an official fw with samba enabled soon. I noticed that my ntfs partition is mounted ro. Will they add fuse and ntfs-3g for uCLinux?
haxplore 03-01-07, 02:35 PM I plugged in my ipod, and the player can see it. :) However, readonly too:

Well, Antivirus released some romfiles here (look into inter.zip): http://amd.co.at/anti/hd-player/mx760/intern/
However, the pwd was not deleted from /etc/shadow, so I could not log in. I had to unpack the romfile, do the changes myself, repack the romfile. Then create the pkg file (it is just a tad more tricky), and finally update the player.
I am working on something to make things simpler, but you can mount the romfile (with -o loop) to extract its contents, then use the genromfs util to create a new one. After this, you are halfway there. :)
A tool could be put together very quickly by a perl or python developer perhaps. :) My modified fw is 6.5 megs, I just do not have a site to upload it too.
Cheers,
h
ps. I use ubuntu too, however not on the mvix yet. ;)

Well, it sounds a little too complicated for just an enthusiast like me :D I will wait some more for an official FW release that supports NAS function: it shouldn't be too difficult for a developer so I hope it comes soon... Anyway I will look with much interest to your hacks and experiments ;)
See ya soon :)
nemster 03-02-07, 05:31 AM haxplore: could you maybe write a small tutorial or listing of commands you use to pack/repack the firmware and load it, change it etc... ?
Yeah that would be awesome! You and Antivirus could make some unofficial FW release and free us from the pain of running the official FW :D
Hello all,
I've created a script in Perl to pack ROMFS files into PKG firmware files. Obviously use at your own risk, but I have taken antivirus's telnet enabled ROMFS and used this script to create a Firmware pkg that loaded onto the player perfectly.
$ perl makeFirmware.pl <ROMFS>
Please improve it and post it back!
On my other problem of the unrecognised Hard Drive, I am able to get the player to recognise the drive if I do a hardware factory reset - hold down OK and Stop for 5 seconds while powering up. Then if I power off and on again it no longer recognises it. I'm hoping to use the telnet login to check the boot messages later when I get home. (I can't attach it to the network in the office.) Another hard drive I tested in the player was recognised without any difficulty... weird...
Owen
Cool job owenob!!!
Before trying it I'd like to know the consequences of an unofficial fw update going wrong... Would I still be able to factory reset the device to solve the problem, or once the fw doesn't work the device is to be trashed?
You can fiddle with some of this stuff if you only run Windows also. Do a web search for romfs-tools.zip. This contains tools that will extract and repack a romfs image, which is what the pkg file is if you strip off the first 108 bytes of header info.
I used cygwin and dd to skip the first 108 bytes. There may be an easier way. Then running extract-romfs from the romfs-tools file, I was able to unpack the package and poke around. Educational.
I believe antivirus recommended renaming usr/curacao/curacao and then putting a script in its place to start telnetd. Seems like (haven't tried it yet) you could also add a file to the etc/init.d directory to start telnetd. I'd so an S40telnetd file myself. I'll try it when I get a chance.
Using owenob's perl script and genromfs or perhaps make-romfs_fat from the romfs-tools file you should be able to make a new package that will install correctly.
As you look for romfs info, you'll see that other devices use this same format. I saw a discussion on the Ziova site about creating themes using these techniques. Seems like themes would be in usr/curacao/gui/bitmaps, but I haven't confirmed that either.
MonkeyGoD 03-03-07, 09:01 AM Unfortunately, the Mvix designers used a the EM8621L and not the EM8623L, the 21L doesn't support H.264 decoding.
Check the sigma designs site for the EM8620L Series and look at the back of the product brochure (I can't post a link here yet until I post a few more times).
It looks like these are pin compatible though ... I wonder if they could be swapped if they were available (reasonably)? or maybe they'll offer an upgrade later if enough folks scream for it.
Shouldn't there be enough owners now for someone to confirm if it can do h.264 or not?
And if not, do we know for sure if there if any other media player that can do it? If not, is there any confirmed ones in the future?
haxplore 03-03-07, 09:07 AM @owenbob
Great work, thanks! I had a look at it and it does the job fine. :) However, please test the md5 hash part again. I seem to get different results, but it might be my fault. ;) Just extract the bin-file from the official 1.1.17 fw, repack it with your script and compare the two files.
Sorry to hear about your hdd problem. Luckily, I only had a broken usb cable. The player recognized that it had been connected to the pc, but xp did not detect it. Using a different usb cable solved the problem...
haxplore 03-03-07, 09:10 AM I think the chipset itself does not support h264... :(
But prove me wrong and I will be an even happier player owner. ;)
haxplore 03-03-07, 09:37 AM I am busy with setting up a toolchain to compile new stuff for the player. It is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be. :) I wonder how long it took for antivirus to have a working toolchain. ;) He is very quiet though, new release soon?
Personally, I think it is rather hard to brick the player, however, nobody will guaranty this for you. :D
Consider this:
The player has an 8 MB flash ROM chip, where it stores all its software. It is divided to 4 parts:
- boot loader (128kB) inits hw, can do tftp/fw upate if necessary, passes control to the fw
- firmware (7.75MB) simply put, this is the romfs and contains everything important including the kernel and the gui
- 64kB for storing the configuration (this is why you do not loose your settings between power offs and fw updates)
- 64kB for user preferences (whatever it is...)
As you see, the first 128kB is occupied by the boot loader. So, if you screw up the fw, the boot loader will be still intact (theoretically ;)) and you can tftp a new fw to the player. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers,
h
haxplore 03-03-07, 09:42 AM Btw, is there a free wiki page we could collect all this info? I have local wiki of course, but sharing is good. ;)
@haxplore
There's a nice free wiki at PBwiki - I set up "mvix-pbwiki-com" (darn 5 post URL restriction! ;-) ). The wiki password is Mv1x.
I believe the MD5 hash is different because gzip puts the date in the header of the compressed output. This makes the data different, but exactly the same filesize...
Best of luck with the toolchain! Let me know how you're doing and if there's any help you need.
Owen

Did you edit his script so that it creates 1.1.17 instead of 1.1.18? Or are you saying that the MD5 sig is different, nothing else? Guess I'm asking how you compared the two. Thanks.
haxplore 03-03-07, 05:54 PM @owenbob
Thanks very much for setting up the wiki. I am going to add all info I collected or figured out so far, but now I will watch a movie. :) I had the player since Tuesday and didn't get to watch anything on it, yet.
@misko
I just added a line to owenbob's script to print the md5 sum when run, and it seems to be different most of the time. I think it works OK, though. I suspect that it is either genromfs or gzip that produces different output (maybe a timestamp issue??). Just out of curiosity, is the md5 hash the same on your system when run several times?
Cheers,
h

Well, if I run md5sum manually on the romfs file, it is (as one would hope) the same every time. As owenbob mentioned, gzip puts a timestamp in the gzip header. If I skip over the first 116 bytes when running cmp on 2 pkg files, they compare the same. This skips the Mvix header (108 bytes), 4 bytes of intro and 4 bytes of mtime in the gzip header. So I'm pretty comfortable that it works as advertised. What I'm less comfortable about is the output of make-romfs on my system, as if I extract-romfs 1.1.17, and then make-romfs 1.1.17, I seem to get different sized romfs files. But perhaps I did something wrong as I was doing 3 different things at once.

Great, I just sleep better if I know what happens exactly ;)
About the make-romfs issue. I usually run genromfs -V "mambo" -d /romfsdir -f update_temp.bin. The file size is always the same (when I don't fiddle with the files in the romfs dir :)). Is your new file bigger or smaller than the old file?

bzgrowllaa 03-05-07, 09:29 AM The Mvix has 4 zoom settings available. Normal, 2x, 3x and 4x. Is it possible through firmware modification to add zoom settings that conform to the popular aspect ratios like 720x480 (1.5:1), 1.85:1 2:35:1 to fit a 16/9 1.77777 screen. The only one I have gotten to work kind of good is 4:3 with the pan screen setting and setting the TV display type to 4:3.
haxplore 03-05-07, 08:54 PM Hello everybody,
Just a short update. I added more info to the wiki. A lot more to come as I find time.

Anyone know whether Mvix is going to add FLAC support to the MX-760HD? I am at a point where I need decide which format I am going to continue with.
Hi to everybody!
The idea of the Wiki is awesome :D
May I ask you what's the difference between Downmix and Passthrough in the SPDIF OUT setting option of the MX-760 HD
Many thanks ;)

Squished Squirre 03-09-07, 05:00 PM I would suspect that downmix converts whatever audio format is playing (DD 5.1, WMV9, etc) to 2 channel PCM @ 48K.

Hey i just bought one of these units { MviX MX-760HD } from E-Bay
http : // tiny url .com /24323a
And i asked the seller if it were possible to manage (transfer/delete/move) files on the internal hard drive via my networked computer, and he said:
"Yes, you can transfer files either wirelessly or via wired connectivity."
Can anyone confirm this at all, because i have yet to receive my order yet and have not seen any new firmware at all which says that this feature is now enabled...???
even though i saw a statement that said:
"Q: "...but what if I want to transfer files wirelessly to the 'Mvix'-HDD?"
A: OK, you got us there... SORT OF. Although the ability to transfer files across the wireless signal is not an option YET, we will be releasing a FIRMWARE update that will allow you to enable this drive as a NAS/NDAS device, which means you will be able to manage (transfer/delete/move) the files on the internal hard drive via your network computers. We have no ETA on this firmware update yet, but STAY TUNED because this feature is coming!"
Let me update you a bit. I e-mailed the customer service few days ago:
Q:" I have recently bought a Mvix MX-760 HD and I really miss the NAS function on this device.
When will the NAS function be available via firmware update?
It's really important for me as it is for many other customers who bought the MX-760 HD,"
A:"our developer working add it..
but, he need time... maybe.. end of march... it is possible.. pls.. wait..
thanks.."
By now there's no way of using it as a NAS unless applying some hacks to the firmware :(

I hope your hard drive problem is solved. The player sees it as:
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1
It is a seagate 320G drive with one primary partition formatted as ntfs. I get the drive out and plugged it on the ide bus of my pc to partition and format it, though. I can't remember how the jumper is set, but I can have a look if you need it.

mobycane 03-11-07, 11:25 PM Hi to all 760HD users, I have placed my order for the 760HD and hoping to use my player first day i lay my hands on it, I have already bought a 320gb PATA HDD.
Qns: Can I format the hdd to ntfs and dump all my movies onto the hdd via my comp rite now? Must I set the 'drive label' on the new hdd and are there any rules for creating folders in the new hdd ?
thanks for your answers :)
nemster 03-12-07, 08:54 AM mobycane: jup you can and you are free to whatever layout you want.
although if you have other os' you may want to use fat32 instead.
gregsmith 03-12-07, 10:15 AM I was wondering if anyone knows is it actually possible to run the likes of firefox and azureus on uclinux (specifically on the 760hd)?
Is there something in the way that makes this impossible or is it just a matter of time?
Also if one of the hackers could send me just the necessary files to change the GUI I'll happily work on some new designs. Unlike firmware hacking this is something I can actually do ;)
nemster 03-12-07, 11:03 AM firefox and azureus is a mission impossible since there is no xwindow system. (correct me if im wrong)
you can use a small torrent app like ctorrent though. there are uclinux routers who have torrent functionality (ie asus wl 500).
maybe there is a browser. i know that my kiss dvdplayer (also arm) has a browser like interface for their html like sites.
but this needs some work i guess...
Another cool feature would be an integration with the Music Player Daemon.
I know: one day, maybe :D
@gregsmith
Here's the GUI images, sound files and Strings resource. You can find the screenshots in the manual if you don't have access yet to a player. Go nuts! :)
(The URLs are in my next post - I need to make one more post to get to the magic 5!)
Still can't get the Hard Drive to work - even when I create the device manually in the ROMFS it just removes it from the in-memory version...
$ mkdir -p dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0
$ cd dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0
$ mknod disk b 3 0
$ mknod part1 b 3 1
(Node type (3,0) is the entire drive attached to the master slot on IDE1, Node type (3,1) is the first partition on this drive - hence "disk" and "part1" (partition 1). These would normally be /dev/sda and /dev/sda1 in linux.)
I've given up and have ordered a new drive... Ah I needed to switch out the drives on my home server anyways... Suggestion to anyone - don't format your player's hard drive to ext3! :( You can't get it back! (I've tried a couple of things the Mvix support suggested, but it didn't work...)

gregsmith 03-13-07, 05:37 AM Yeah, I do actually quite like the GUI. The icons are great.
I'm really sick of blue everywhere but you can change the wallpaper in the settings (which I'm yet to try).
I still like to have a mess around and it'd be nice to have a slight variety of themes. Most of the original images are png-24s so sizes won't change much.
Is it option for code pages for divx subtitles in different languages possible? Thanks!
Hi all,
I seem destined never to use my player... :(
I replaced the Hard Drive that wasn't recognised, and that was all fine - I was able to copy files onto the drive and watch them - fantastic. Then I decided to fiddle with the Firmware a bit and guess what - the player won't load up any more! It just powers on, says LOADING... for about 20 seconds and then powers down.
So I'm trying to TFTP a firmware onto the player now.
I have reconfigured my home network to be 192.168.100.x, and set up a tftp server on 192.168.100.2. Hold down OK and Setup, and then power on. The player goes into EMERGENCY UPDATE mode with an ip of 192.168.100.3 and downloads the firmware (which must be called "romimg.emergency"). After it downloads the firmware (takes about 30 seconds), it then tries to verify it, and no matter what I use as the romimg.emergency file the verification fails. I've tried the complete .pkg firmware, I've tried the ROMFS in compressed and uncompressed format, I've tried all combinations of the two, but every one of them has failed verification.
Has anyone managed to flash their player via TFTP? Can you let me know what file you used?
Thanks!
Owen
ShadoWind 03-24-07, 06:33 AM I've read reviews of this device and supposedly there's a lot of problems with it, some of which have been fixed by a member here called "antivirus" using modified firmware which he created and I was wondering if there was a website where I could find information on the differences which makes his firmware better than the official firmware for this particular device...
I have been using my mx760hd for approx 1 month. I use it "as advertised". I have had little to no problems with both wireless and direct viewing from my supplied internal hard drive. Buy it and use it without user modification and you will love it.

bradesp 03-26-07, 02:24 PM Quick question. Does the current firmware allow the MX-760HD to see NAS devices on the network? If so can I assume this means that streaming VOB files from the NAS is a piece of cake?
Thanks!

So you are able to stream movies over a wireless network with no picture lag at all? What file format are you using VOB, ISO, DIVX.... and what wireless protocol.. B, G?
Hook us up man... everyone else is having issues streaming. That's why I bought this thing... what's the use if I gotta run wires.
jodavis 03-26-07, 03:26 PM I am able to stream iso wirelessly but I had to do a little rearranging to do it without lag. I am using wireless-N between my computer and router which the 760-HD is plugged into wired.

My plasma monitor has a native resolution of 1366x768. Can the MX-760HD output that resolution over the DVI port or is it fixed at 1280x768 in 720p mode? I would be much obliged to anyone with the answer.

hal-9000 03-26-07, 06:27 PM more remote wars;
After fiddling more with the MX-760HD remote and my MX-500 learning remote I was able to learn the "play/pause" key, after a dozon attempts. So, it is possible. Anyone understand with the trouble is with the MX-760HD remote signals????????????
Update, I've now got all the important keys learned. Hit and miss to do it, I don't know what the trick is, I played with distance between the remotes, fresh batteries, dark room, nothing seems to improve the learning problem, you just have to spend a lot of time and try it again and again.
I'd love to hear if anyone understands why it's so difficult to learn the remote codes from the MX-760 remote.
I am using an G router located approx 40' away from the MX760HD. I have no problem with any format other than HD. Seems the bandwith for HD is greater than my G router can handle. I have totally stopped burning movies. I store them on my puter or on the internal hard drive of the Mx for later viewing.
haxplore 03-28-07, 01:46 PM Hi,
Any luck? I have seen that you updated the wiki entry. I never flashed it using tftp and now I am a bit worried. If that is not reliable then what is??
Hi haxplore,
TFTP works well once you have the right "romimg.emergency" file! I got it from MVix support and it's linked on the wiki.
One thing i found was that the TFTP wouldn't work over my WLAN. The player was wired, but the laptop with the TFTP server was wireless. I put ethereal/wireshark on the laptop but even though i could see the packets requesting the file, it wouldn't kick off the transfer until i wired the laptop into the network... Very odd - perhaps it was my wireless router (it's a buffalo).
anyway, I've broken the firmware again - trying to be too fancy, so i'll be flashing again tonight. Having a 3 month old baby is fantastic but you don't get as much time to tinker as you used to!

bzgrowllaa 03-30-07, 10:59 AM Waiting for official NAS support firmware has been painful. However, i bought a USB 2.0 to IDE 2.5 or 3.5 and SATA cable with included 12V power adapter. Only costed about $15 and now I have a IDE DVD-rom drive hooked up so now I can watch all my DVDs and even easily swap my old 40G hd with all my mp3z on it quickly if need be. I currently have a 320 Gb in the mvix but thinking i may swap in the 40 gb until the NAS gets working to give me the portability. or just do a centralized NAS device that the mvix can play from.
Looks like they've posted v1.1.25 of their firmware. Haven't tried it yet, but I didn't see network transfer of files among the list of changes.

I have installed it.
CONS: STILL NO file transfer ...  .... anybody knows when they plan to release it????
PROS: seems to be more stable, faster and now the wlan configures automaticaly.... :) :)
jeepfanz 03-31-07, 10:17 PM Playback of .ISO files stopped working for me. Anyone else? I have over 200 .ISO's on my NAS that I can't play now!
.VOBs seem to work fine but still can't play from upper level folder (Title level or VIDEO_TS). I always get a "VIDEO_TS.IFO unrecognised file type" error.
I've dropped back to V1.1.17, I'm not expanding the .ISOs, I prefer that format as it's much cleaner IMHO.
I think that these guys missed the mark with this "upgrade", I was hoping for FTP and NAS with expanded features, not breaking what works already.
Squished Squirre 04-02-07, 01:13 PM I see they now support Linux filesystems. I still wonder if when they eventually support NAS functionality if we will be required to use a filesystem other than NTFS. (Is there stable NTFS Write filesystem support for ucLinux?)
Looks like the update fixes some things that I had seen... the LCD and front panel button issues being 2.
Wonder if it has fixed SSID/password entry to allow spaces?
"Improved video output quality" Like maybe they fixed the horrid gamma, contrast and brightness problems?
Have to try it out tonight.

If I had to guess, I would say yes. Ext2 or 3 will probably be required. I don't think there is stable NTFS write support. Just poking around at the various firmwares it looks like BusyBox 1.0 is used for embeded command support. Luckily v1.0 supports telnetd that's where the telnet hack came from.
It seems right now, that the kernel is compiled with smbfs support, which enables mounting of windows shared file systems.
The good news is that later versions of BusyBox have samba support. This enables sharing the drive from the 760. So, it looks like the developers are on their way there.
I've never done any cross compiler work, but it might be easy enough just to compile a new version of of busybox?

dfelteau 04-02-07, 11:15 PM There's a new community / forum site called http://www.mvixcommunity.com/ as well. We'd be happy to host a wiki for the Mvix community on our dedicated server so you can upload any hacks and not worry about the 10mb limit on PBwiki for free.
@haxplore
Owen
Hi xracers
I've been trying to build the toolchain for a week or so now - I don't know if you can build the toolchain that Sigma provided - it's missing several bits (intentionally) - including the linux config. I've tried to build another ARM cross compiler toolchain (http://www.schnozzle.org/~coldwell/toolchain/) and it didn't compile, but I've not yet checked into the reason.
One thing to note is that the compilers produce executables in ELF format whereas the MVix needs Binary Flat (bFLT) format. There is an included elf2flt convertor, but I think the elf executable needs to have been compiled with the -elf2flt flag enabled to allow this convertor to work. So basically you can't just take an existing ARM executable and run it on the MVix. I'll figure it out eventually!
If anyone has managed to get a toolchain working I'd be very interested to hear from you!
gregsmith 04-03-07, 05:32 AM I've just been thinking about Joost (if anyone has an invite to the beta, please, please pm me!) and how great it would be if we could get it onto the mvix at some point. I assume they'll make a browser version at some point, or at least a linux version so hopefully it can happen.
I'm assuming companies will be making 'joost boxes' eventually anyway that just have a net connection at one side and a tv out on the other.
Anyone who's wondering what the hell I'm on about look here - http://www.joost.com/ ;)
haxplore 04-03-07, 03:32 PM @dfelteau
Thanks for bringing the community site to our attention and for your offer. I would be happy to make additions to that wiki.
@owenbob
I spent quite some time on building a toolchain. :) Tried it under cygwin and ubuntu, too. It is still not working properly. :( Kernel compile is a pain (broken makefiles and so on). Tried several versions of uclinux kernel, uclibc and busybox. Still, I did not give it up. I hope we can share knowledge on this, and hopefully get somebody with cross-compiling experience to help us out. BTW, I could compile a simple hello world program (and run it on the player), the toolchain created bflt executable.
I have just downloaded the new firmware and will have a look in a bit.

Strings through the kernel has this:
/home/way/mvix/armutils_2.5.113.0/build_arm/linux-2.4.26-em86xx/
Does that look familiar to anyone? I wonder where we could get those utils?
olympia 04-03-07, 05:05 PM I am suffering to configure Mvix device to access shares on my Thecus N2100 NAS box (running samba).
Can anyone suggest me how it is possible to see the shares, can browse the shares (if I set public availibility to the share), see the media files, but when I point on them, nothing happens, like there would be no read rights... or something.
When I am accessing shares on my winXP machine, it is working fine.
So, is anybody has an idea, where to find the issue?
Somebody, who has a working interoperability with samba, could you share your smb.conf with me?
Thanks!

Fw 1.1.25 is on my player now (with telnetd enabled of course). Did not have much time to play with it yet, but the gui seems faster the very least. I found this poking around:
# cat /proc/driver/em8xxx/0/version
Release version: 2.5.113.0
I wonder whether we can use any version of uclibc for compiling an ftp daemon (or samba).
Good hacking,

haxplore 04-03-07, 06:16 PM Can you play files hosted on your thecus from windows xp (with media player or something)? Shares mounted by the mvix player use options (well, it might give a clue):
type cifs (rw,nodiratime,nosuid,unc=\\servername\sharename,username=gu est,domain=,rsize=4100,wsize=4100)
Since you can browse the files, I guess your guest ok and public options in smb.conf are ok. Check out the permissions of files/directories. What file system are you using?
Cheers,
h
olympia 04-04-07, 01:29 AM Yes, I forgot to mention that from Vista and WinXP everything is accessible and playable in Thecus. No problem.
I've tried to set every rights on those share as open as I can.
There is rwx right to the owner user, group and other as well.
I have set ACLs with setfacl to the same rights. Everybody have rights to everything on these folders, in my understanding at least :)
I don't see how it is possible that Mvix cannot connect as guest, while Windows machines can connect to Thecus as authenticated user and as guest as well.
I am really, absolutly not a linux guru, so I don't think I see a good overview of the issue, but it is frustrating me very much
Is that true that to linux based device cannot connet to each other with guest credentials? :p Nevertheless I still think that it is a configuration issue, which I am not aware, but no more idea.
I can confirm that ext3 support is working in 1.1.25 - took a deep breath and converted my newly bought replacement HDD from NTFS... expecting a recurrence of my original HDD problems! Strangely enough my original HDD when formatted to ext3 still isn't recognised by the player... Maybe the Hitachi's aren't supported? (400GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K400 8MB Cache Hard Drive 7K400-0A3022)
(For the record, my current HDD which is working perfectly is a Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB IDE ATA/100 8MB 7200RPM.)
@haxplore - I'll work on the toolchain again at the weekend and let you know of any success...
jeepfanz 04-04-07, 09:34 AM I am suffering to configure Mvix device to access shares on my Thecus N2100 NAS box (running samba).
Looks like I have a similar setup, but I haven't had any issues with seeing shared folders on my N2100. I can check the config file and report back when I get back home tonight, but from what I recall there was nothing special in the setup. I've got about 200 dvd .iso's in two public folders on the NAS that I can play no problem.
Well there is one caveat, when I upgraded to v1.1.25 the MX760 would no longer play the .iso's. I can see 'em, and select them, but pressing "enter" or "play" on them does nothing. I've dropped back to v1.1.17, and they all play fine again. (I have an open ticket with mvix support on this, they're unable to confirm or deny at this point)

Do you have SSH access to your NAS device? If yes, could you please save the smb.conf and send me by email? Thank in advance!
However, did you tried to play anything else than .ISO with the firmware revision 1.1.25? I mean, is the "not playing" problem affected only ISO-s, or every other media type as well?

I haven't set up SSH yet, but from what I've seen I should be able to do it easily. I'll set it up tonight and grab the smb.conf file. Should be no problem.
As for playing other formats, under v1.1.25 I can play .vob's if I select them directly (from standard dvd file format), but trying to play .ifo's gets me an "unsupported" error. Pressing "play" from the VIDEO_TS folder gets me the same error after it loads the .ts file.
.mpg's and .avi's were ok.
TheGizzard 04-04-07, 01:12 PM Guys.. I have the 760... I got some buyers remorse and tried to return it to get an XBMC... just because of the interface...
Anyone working on getting the interface to look as good as XBMC?
olympia 04-04-07, 03:43 PM .mpg's and .avi's were ok.
Very much interesting!
I just wanted to confirm, that v1.1.25 are not able to connect to Samba properly, as I dropped back to v1.1.17 following you, and now everything plays fine. On v1.1.25 I was not able to access any type of media, even not an mp3. Now it works. Thank you jeepfanz.
But I am wondering what can I expect from the next firmware versions, if they are not aware of this issue. Still I cannot imagine why is it worked for you, with everything, but ISO.
TheGizzard 04-04-07, 10:11 PM My 760 is on 1.25, connects to my Linksys NSLU2 NAS with no problem. Drive formatted at EXT3.
Playing mostly VOBs.
jeepfanz 04-04-07, 11:33 PM Well hopefully they can sort this out.
I managed to enable SHH and pulled my smb.conf. I've attached a copy for you to look at, but I'm glad that you got it working in v1.1.17.

Just wondering: are you absolutly sure, that .mp3, .avi, .mpg was OK with the newest firmware?
Because it would be more simple problem reporting to Mvix, that the new firmware is not compatible with Samba at all, than report it is working some cases, but not in other cases.
Anyway, as I am not a US/Canadian customer, I am not entitled to open ticket at Mvix, so....
@olympia,
You can open a ticket - just select "Non US Customer". They are very good at getting back to you. The English is quite amusing - they can be fairly sarcastic!

I'm pretty sure, but I will re-flash to v1.1.25 and check again tonight. The point that you bring up about Samba share issues has got me thinking that Samba configuration might actually be the issue.
There's more discusion going on on the Mvic Community site (http://mvixcommunity.com/showtopic.php?tid/25/) about what may be Samba config changes in the Mvix box with this firmware.
This has me curious about what's really going on. I'm going to load a couple of ISOs onto the 760 HDD (along with other formats) and see if they play locally.
More later ...

Yes, I have already read that thread, but:
- guest = ok at each share in config file did not help on my setup
- would be ridiculous solution to configure samba to security = share and I don't think Thecus would "eat" that :(
But I've checked what they wrote there, with v1.1.25 Thecus is trying to connect share as user: root!?, not guest as before... Interesting, and I think it shouldn't do that...
I would be really surprised if it is working on your Thecus setup. I mean, than I have something misconfigured, which I am not aware... Waiting for your feedback on that.
jeepfanz 04-06-07, 09:41 AM Ok, reflashed to v1.1.125 last night, after loading the HDD on the MX760 with files for : mp3, avi, mpg, wmv, full dvd file structure (VIDEO_TS/.ts, .ifo, .vob) and iso.
I was able to play all of these, except the .IFO's from the dvd file structure, from the LOCAL HDD with out problem. This is consistent with operations under v1.1.17, as the .ifo's wouldn't play under that version either.
I navigated to the network shares that held the same files on shared folders (XP pro) and the N2100. The mp3, avi, mpg, wmv and video vobs played from the network shares on the XP machine. The isos would not play from the N2100, selectable but not playable.
I dont have mp3s, avis, mpgs, wmvs or vobs on the N2100. I can't remember if i tried to play isos from the XP shares or not.
I will move some more files around tonight and test again, it was late last night before I could get to this and I was too beat to go any further. One more try tonight ...
olympia 04-06-07, 10:11 AM I am able to play with all those media from XP Pro share as well, with firmware v1.1.25, but not from Thecus.
Trying to play anything from Thecus leads to the same result, as you with the ISO's.
Wondering if it is working @at, if you move other media types to Thecus and trying to play with Mvix.
Thanks!
jeepfanz 04-07-07, 04:58 PM Nope, nothing plays from the N2100, nothing. I tried mp3, avi, mpg, wmv, ts, ifo, vob & iso. No Joy on any of them.
ISO's play fine from the XP Pro shares, along with everything else.
Looks like the changes that they added for network and file sharing screwed up the samba share configuration.
It sure would be great if there were accessible configs on the MX7600 via ssh or something, or some way to configure shares from the setup screen.
I'm back to v1.1.17 until I can figure out what they changed for this in v1.1.125
Guys,
Can the 760 play HD .ts/mpg files from a USB powered 2.5" portable external drive?
Can both an external DVD drive and an external HDD be connected via a USB hub?
Thank you in advance.
Can someone tell me if this unit will allow you to play internet radio stations on your stereo???
I've read through a lot of information on it and can't seem to pin this down.
Any info would be appreciated!

Some folks were able to connect Samba shares, which is running on a regular PC with some modification in the samba config, but I was not able to manage it on N2100. (you may also read about that in mvixcommunity). It is really frustrating. I very much hope, they ara aware of this issue.
Which is a big difference between 1.1.25 and 1.1.17, that 1.1.25 is connecting to network shares with user name "root", while 1.1.17 is connecting with "guest".
I am not sure if this is cause to problem, as if I understand well, according to the smb.config, N2100 should threat root user as guest account, but it is just not work.
And changing "security = share" from "security = user" is not an option, rather a joke...
Squished Squirre 04-08-07, 10:50 AM Finally got around to trying 1.1.25... wish I hadn't. Same problem others have reported: Can't connect to any of the network shares that worked perfectly before. (Samba)
This is serious enough I would hope for a quick 1.1.26, but I won't hold my breath.

Did you guys reported the bug as well? I shouldn't be alone, as in this case they might not take the problem as seriously, as it is.
Squished Squirre 04-09-07, 01:54 PM I reported it. Explained that connection to Samba servers was busted... well, more detailed than that, but that was the gist of it. This is the reply I got:
Thank you for contacting MvixUSA Support Center.
We regret to hear the inconvenience or problem you
have with your Mvix Multimedia Center.
We are aware of the issue you reported and development
team are working on the fix. We will hopefully include
this fix in the next firmware update.
For now, please downgrade back to 1.1.17.
Thank you again for your understanding.
Copying files over the network - simple solution.
Hi all,
Olav has entered some information on the Wiki showing how to copy files to the 760 - a very simple solution that may work for some (it _almost_ works for me...)
http://mvix.pbwiki.com/information
Basically, busybox contains the wget command. You can telnet to the player and then wget files from your local webserver or FTP server. You must have converted to ext3 for this to work, as NTFS drives are not writable. Neat! Thanks Olav!
Unfortunately, Apache2 (<2.2.x) has a limitation where it cannot serve files greater than 2gigs! So I need to install an FTP server.. You can recompile apache from source or upgrade, but what a pain!

PS - Hnmnmmn installed Pure-FTPd and I'm getting

when I try to get large files... Doomed to failure I am! Doomed!!!!!!!
olympia 04-10-07, 02:59 AM well, more detailed than that, but that was the gist of it.
The mail what I quoted was about the 3rd post of me to the support. My initial post was more detailed as well, but as the support guy for non-US customers first tell me that it is working for them, I had to convince him :)
SuperFrodo 04-10-07, 02:11 PM Hi all
I'm new here. I bought my 760HD 2 weeks ago and already upgraded to version 1.1.25. I have a Samsung 400GB harddisk built in.
I can show movies as .iso, play music as .mp3 and show pictures as .jpg. This all I can do one by one.
=> But how to play music with the jukebox, with a playlist, how to add new songs to my list and play them randomly?
I have read in earlier posts, that somebody could create a playlist with .m3u. I created one with Winamp, and changed the entries from I:\music\... to /music/... or HDD2/music/... But nothing is playing.
How did you do it? Can somebody help and describe how to do it?
How about pictures? 5MP .jpg are just awful to watch, on a plasma tv 1366x768 they have a smaller resolution than it could be. It can not be, that this 760HD can not resize it properly.
Do I have to shrink them to the right pixel size?
Thanks a lot for help

Internet Radio is not supported on the MX-760HD or any Mvix but definitely has been suggested to Unicorn (the manufacturer) and has been brought up on Mvixcommunity:

Can both an external DVD drive and an external HDD be connected via a USB hub?
Thank you in advance.
You can play HD .ts/mpg files from a USB powered external drive. There are actually two USB-host ports so you would not need a USB hub to only hook in two devices. You can have an external DVD drive and an external HDD though.
One thing to note, I had some video problems while playing a DVD from an external DVD drive and have a thread going over here (http://mvixcommunity.com/showtopic.php?tid/75/).
Doug,
Thanks for the reply. My 760 arrives today and I can't wait to fire it up.

The SIZE error message is for files over 2^32 bytes long, that's a limitation of the wget command in that busybox version. You could chop your files up into suitable chunks and cat them together on the device. And stock Apache 2.0.55 on 64-bit Ubuntu Edgy will happily pass you files over 4Gb btw. However, there is a better solution.
The kernel in the 1.1.25 firmware on the MX-760HD has nfs support, so much in the same way that you can wget you can also mount remote nfs shares once you've hacked your firmware to allow telnetting into the box.
Quick guide:
1. Export an nfs share from a local server to your Mvix. Exercise left to the reader.
2. You need local storage attached to the Mvix. This because you need to create a mount point on a device that the Mvix will show in the gui. For testing purposes you can mount on /mnt but you won't be able to use the gui to browse that.
3. Create a mount point(directory) somewhere on the local storage:
way# df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 6986 6986 0 100% /
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1283855840 215820 268988340 0% /tmp/ide/part1
way# mkdir /tmp/ide/part1/data
3. Then simply mount the external share:
way# mount home:/data /tmp/ide/part1/data
NOTE! There is no local portmapper or other daemons available on the Mvix so the mount command will actually take about 5 minutes of various timeouts before it
does the mount. Be patient.
4. Voila
way:~# df /tmp/ide/part1/data
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
home:/data ... ... ... 91% /tmp/ide/part1/data
Playing files over NFS is much faster than using CIFS, and 720p is more or less watchable compared to the stuttering, sometimes even loss of sound, pain in the neck you get over CIFS. Less protocol-overhead and the nfs-talking is handled in the kernel instead of the userland CIFS process probably does the trick. The 200MHz ARM processor embedded in the Sigma decoding chip doesn't appear to be fast enough to handle both the media player and CIFS at the speeds needed for 720p++.

Squished Squirre 04-12-07, 09:42 AM Err... so if you have the telnet patched firmware installed, and your 760 is already connected via CIFS to a share on your server, then is there anything to stop you from just using cp to move files from the share to the local drive in the 760? Is the CIFS share browsable from the shell of the 760?

They're not mounted by default, however you have access to smbmount commands so you can do that yourself in exactly the same way as the nfs mounting above.
way:~# smbmount_simple //home/video /tmp/ide/part1/data -o username=guest
Password:
Anonymous login successful

Calling send_fs_socket

none ... ... ... 91% /tmp/ide/part1/data

olympia 04-12-07, 03:30 PM Olav,
Is there any way with telnet access to change the default username (root) with which 760HD browsing CIFS shares?
- would be ridiculous solution to configure samba to security = share and I don't think Thecus would "eat" that :(
And changing "security = share" from "security = user" is not an option, rather a joke...
Hi. I had a share problem after upgrade to 1.1.25 that I solved changing the security mode to share. I don't know much about smb/cifs and Samba but reading the official documentation I see:
There are two options: share-level and user-level. Which of these two the client receives affects the way the client then tries to authenticate itself. It does not directly affect (to any great extent) the way the Samba server does security. This may sound strange, but it fits in with the client/server approach of SMB. In SMB everything is initiated and controlled by the client, and the server can only tell the client what is available and whether an action is allowed.
So I'd be grateful if you could point me out what's wrong with that setting :)

Not that I've found. The application doing all the non-codec work on the 760 is a monolithic blob of code that is difficult to penetrate. However, this root-stuff is clearly a bug and reported to Mvixusa by me and others. Hopefully they will revert to using guest in the next firmware release.

IF you're on your local, fully controlled network with a server handing out shares to a known set of devices, there really is no difference. If noone outside your house can access your network, you can use whatever you want.
The main difference is:
Share level security: There is one password protecting the share, if you know this then you can connect.Note that it's much easier to brute force a random password than to try to brute force a combination of a similar password and a username.
User level security: Connecting to the share requires a username/password pair, and you can allow any number of these pairs.
In real life environments, it is sometimes important to know the identity of the person connecting to a share. And it's convenient to be able to allow certain people to connect while denying others. Personal accounts is definitely the way to go wrt any real form of security. Individual access restrictions require user level security, not share level. But if it's just a matter of you, your server and your media player, then it doesn't really matter.

Thanks, I guessed the this bug is a part of the application code.
Anyway, I reported it as well, just asked, because, if it would be possible, I could use 1.1.25 instead of .17, but than I wait for the next release.
However I think this bug is serious enough, that should force Mvix to release an immediate bugfixed version (with a 5 minutes development), but.....

marscandybars 04-13-07, 07:17 PM Hey guys! I was planning on buying this player, but i have an important question which will determine if i get the device or not. I see that this device has a DVI output (though i wish it were HDMI). I have a DVI to HDMI cord.
Does the DVI out audio as well, or just video? Cuz if it doesnt output audio, im assuming i would need to use RCA audio cables right ? :(
juny0608 04-13-07, 08:29 PM There is an optical audio port.
Hi all,
I am a newbie here, but I need URGENT HELP from you!
Well, I have recieved my Mvix MX-760HD unit yesterday.
Facory firmware version: 1.1.15
1.) Tried upgrading to 1.1.25 - did not recognise it
2.) So, I tried 1.1.17 first... it started upgrading and frooze at 10%
3.) After restart all i can see it Bootloader menu loading.... nothing happens.
I do not want to send the unit back to the US since I am in Europe and just paid off customs once, don t want to wait 2 weeks for a replacement.
Factory reset did not seem to help, altough it showed up once on the screen, but i did not notice any change.
Please help me, how can I put back the old firmware at least to my unit?
Thank you all in advance,
Regards,
Jaer
I have had 760 since Wednesday.
No internal HDD installed.
Wired Network connection
External DVD drive and HDD attached USB 2.0
Firmware version: 1.1.15
File origination:
Beyond TV signal captured with Hauppauge's HVR-950 as .tp stream
The .tp stream is processed through VideoReDo QUICK STREAM FIX and outputted as .ts file, which is then edited for commercial removal using VideoReDo and outputted as an HD mpg.
Final HD mpg playback :
Video is outputted via component to Toshiba 40H80 RPTV. Audio pass-through via digital coaxial cable to Yamaha 995 HT receiver.
The 760 has the most trouble playing 1080i files (CBS,NBC & CW captures). Video stutters at different points during multiple viewings. Biggest issue is audio problems with the HD mpg files. None of my archived HD mpgs from 1080i sources will play audio and about half of my 720p HD mpgs are silent. I’ve tried playing these files from a USB 2.0 connected HDD and a USB connected DVD drive directly to the 760 and over two networked PCs internal HDDs and their external USB 2.0 and Firewire HDDs.
Final outputted .HD mpg file audio data upon analysis indicate:
Bit rate : 384 Kbps
Bit rate mode : CBR
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Sampling rate : 48 KHz
Channel Positions : Front: L C R, Rear: L R, Subwoofer
On playback of the silent HD mpg files, the 760 displays audio info as 44.1 KHz. All the files in question play perfectly on both of my PCs and file information screens from NERO SHOWTIME, THEATER TECH, WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER,VIDEOREDO, etc indicate audio stream at 48KHz., as does my MEDIA INFO analyzing program.
When the HD mpg file is run through QUICK STREAM FIX in VideoReDo again and outputted as a new .ts file, audio plays and 760 info screen now indicates 48KHz.. The stuttering video is not gone but is slightly improved as well.
The 760 handles 720p files better than 1080i files. Video playback is smoother but again it recognizes many of the files as having 44.1KHz audio and hence there is no audio outputted during playback. Another run through QUICK STREAM FIX in VideoReDo corrects this problem. The 720p files that played well, indicated audio of 48KHz on the 760 info screen.
I was able to stream over my network, an edited HD mpg file (BONES captured from a FOX broadcast 720p) from a Seagate 400 gig external HDD connected by firewire to a PC on the other side of my house, and it played flawlessly.
Next up, a different BONES HD mpg (created the same way) burned to a DVD-R and played from an external USB DVD drive connected to the 760 - the video was good but audio did not play. I verified the DVD’s integrity by playing it in both of my PCs DVD drives. Playback was perfect.
Why the 760 sees the audio as 44.1KHz is confusing me? My uneducated guess is it’s some type of multiplexing issue with VideoReDo. My PCs are able to read/interpret the files but the 760 cannot. It seems that the solution for the time being is to rework the silent HD mpgs in VideoReDo into .ts files. Hopefully, this issue can be addressed by Mvix’s technical staff. In the meantime, all new files I create will be transport streams run through QUICK STREAM FIX two times.

Hi there
The corrupt 1.1.25 firmware was probably messed up in transit to your pc, as most people have gotten that to work fine. There may be something very wrong with your unit tho. You do download the firmware to internal storage or usb device attached to the player before you try to upgrade? Upgrading over the net is NOT recommended.
The instructions to download a rescue image onto the player are fairly easy to perform, but do require a bit of network config knowledge. Se link below where I've tried to describe the process in detail.

Firts off, upgrade to 1.1.25, better all over.
This is probably juts a related bug, as your 720p files work fine after a second round in the redoer. But I've seen the same semi-silent stuttering 720p media, but only over the network. If I first copy them to an internal drive and play from there they're fine. My guess is that the bitrate is borderline too much for the Mvix CPU. Running 'top' on the player while it's playing back a 720p stream over CIFS shows that the cifs process is taking a fair amount of cpu, but doing the same from local storage shows that the software player is pretty much using what it can get of the cpu anyway. So CIFS + heavy bitrate is probably too much for it. Normal ftp/http transfers to the media player tops out at about 7-8 mbit/sec strangely enough, so perhaps they can improve their tcp stack to get around this issue. NFS mounting shares and running 720p from that is on par with transferring locally and then playing, sound okay and very little video stutter. You may want to put in a hard drive just to see if your films are okay from that.
No idea on the 44.1/48 issue, but note that if the player for some reason has problems detecting the correct rate then it will simply show the numbers from the last recognised film it played. So when you get confusing numbers, this may be the cause. This has been reported to Mvixusa.

As juny0608 said, there is audio out. Both coaxial and optical digital and RCA analog. DVI does not carry sound at all, so to be able to use a DVI to HDMI converter you need to use something else besides the DVI/HDMI port to transfer audio to your stereo/tv.
You can download the product manual from Mvixusa to have a look at the various output options yourself, here is a direct link: Mvix MX-760HD Manual (http://www.mvixusa.com/download/manuals/MX760HD_Manual_Full.pdf)

skorianez 04-14-07, 01:54 PM Is this think is MIMO capable or is it a option when buy this?
Olav,
First off, upgrade to 1.1.25, better all over.
I upgraded firmware and performance improved slightly. Firmware upgrade went smoothly using a flash drive. Problem network streaming of certain files is still poor. Just from seeing the flaws of this unit from my perspective, I can not imagine how anyone could successfully stream HD content consistently with a wireless connection.
You may want to put in a hard drive just to see if your films are okay from that.
Will get an internal HDD and try those troubled files from within the 760.
Olav, thank you for your response and suggestions.
Also, for anyone interested, the 760 will not power a Simple Tech 120 gig external 2.5 portable HDD unless both USB connectors of the Y adapter are plugged into the 760. I'm going to try a powered hub to see if that helps.

It's probably easier to think of the device as a sort of backup storage, since there is no real easy way of copying the dvds back off the media player. Wherever you copy stuff from when filling up the media player should be your primary storage.
If you run a modified firmware image which allows you to telnet into the media player, then you could attach a USB storage device, telnet in and copy files from the internal drive to the USB device whenever you felt like doing a backup.

Squished Squirre 04-20-07, 01:44 PM Has anyone located discreet IR power codes for the MVIX? I really hate the remote that comes with the MVIX, and prefer to use my Harmony. Problem is, the harmony works best with discreet ON/OFF codes rather than power toggle codes.
It seems that the ntfs-3g project it's now reliable enough to be used for NTFS filesystems under GNU/Linux. Let's hope the next firmware release will include this driver and NAS feature :)

rderenzy 04-20-07, 11:56 PM Just got my MX-760HD and I'm loving it. The only problem I have is the only shared folder I can view on my Win XP Pro computer is my 'Shared Documents' folder. I've setup sharing on other folders and made their settings exactly like my 'Shared Documents' settings but I cannot see them from my 760. Does anyone know what is special about this folder and why I could view it but not any others?
Regards,
Randy
Nevermind, even though I had my Guest account enabled I did not add it to my folders Permissions. Problem fixed!
After using the 760 for a few weeks, I wanted to share my observations concerning my experiences with my units HD wired streaming performance.
Unfortunately I am not able to successfully stream most of my HD recordings over my wired network. I’ve been encountering erratic audio problems from the majority of my .ts/.mpg files. Fox 720p captures (House, Bones, 24, American Idol) are either hit or miss but mostly miss. A FOX .ts file will begin to play fine (both audio and video), then suddenly a few seconds in, the audio drops out completely. A quick reverse scan of the file for 2 seconds, followed by a resume play will bring the audio back for a couple of seconds to a minute only to have it drop out again. This has become a consistent occurrence.
Strangely, most of my ABC 720p captures play fine. It appears from examining the file information, that ABC’s broadcast is at a lower bit rate and doesn’t present the 760 with much difficulty playing over the network.
My info on FOX 720p .ts captures shows 1280X720 video bit rates between 15-17 Mbps and 6 channel audio bit rates of 448 Kbps @ 48 KHz. ABC captures indicate 1280X720 video bit rates of 13 Mbps and 6 channel audio bit rates of 384 Kbps @ 48 KHz. My 1080i captures from CBS, NBC and CW do not play well at all. Both the audio and video are stuttered across the network.
Olav speculated in his reply to my previous post, that he believes this problem has to do with the 760s bandwith limitations. The above file information comparison seems to reinforce his speculation. I HOPE this issue can and will be addressed in the next firmware update.
All the files, that are not able to be streamed, can be played from an external HDD connected to the 760. The playback performance from the external HDD is stellar. Output from component is very good and files play without hiccups. Long files, (11+ gigs—X-Men 2 for example) can not play all the way through. I assume this has to do with the glitch in playing back files larger than 4 gigs.
It is frustrating to look at this unit and see it’s potential but in it’s present state it is bogged down with multiple performance inhibitors.
1.) The 760’s inability to play while connected from the rear USB slave port to a PC should be addressed. This way, at least if network streaming is restricted, there will be an alternate means to access those files unable to be streamed. This will at least allow transferring and playing functions without having to have access to the rear of the unit to remove the USB cable.
2.) Not being able to consistently stream, via a wired network, common compliant HD media files, is a major flaw. This is the reason I purchased this unit. I do not care that much about .iso and .mp3 playback.
3.} The 760 handles DVD folders poorly as well. I cannot get the unit to read the .ifo file and I need to search out the proper .vob file to begin playback. This is another example of one of this units minor flaws that I’ve read is going to be addressed soon.
Network file transfer capability is going to be a big feature and I’m anxiously awaiting its release. I was hoping I wouldn’t need to install an internal HDD to the 760 but with the current streaming limitations, I will be left with no alternative but to do so.
bunny28 04-22-07, 04:22 AM Hi all,
I've got a small question. In France, the MX-760 HD is not available but we have the equivalent called PeekBox distributed by Peekton.
Everything is similar but when I upgraded my PeekBOX 4 with the latest Firmware, some buttons on my remote control are different.
So my questions:
where I can find information about the remote control in the FW?
Is it possible to change reomte control settings ?
My goal, put the remote control settings of my PeekBox 4 in the FW 1.1.25. Like this I will have the latest FW but with my reomte control settings.
Thx for your help
perpetual98 04-23-07, 02:48 PM Regarding some people's comments about not reading IFO files correctly, I've found, much by accident that if you try to play an IFO file and it gives you an error, just to try it again and it almost always works. I typically use the PLAY button to do this, not sure if it's any different that route.

skweeky 04-25-07, 10:12 AM Hi all,
Is there a special trick to get Mvix-760 to see my external USB HD? No matter what I try, it just doesn't show up!! I'm plugging into the upper USB 2.0 Host A-Type 2 port and powering up the 760, followed by a refresh. I can see the internal Disk and a network share I set up ok, but not my External USB disk (Which works perfectly well on my Windows box.) - Any thoughts?
Many thanks!

I want to use one of these devices to store the kids' dvds on. If the internal hard drive starts to fail, how do I make a backup? I'd hate to have to do the work all over again.
I have a web server running on my Mvix now, which makes it fairly easy to do remote backups of whatever is on the local storage. Almost got upload (PUT) working as well, but still a bit to go there. I'll see if I can find a suitable ftp server instead, as there are more upload clients for ftp than for http. As for now, there is a 2GB file size limit on this way of doing things though, so your DVDs will still be a problem.
You can have a quick look at the files on the Mvix if you point your browser at http://www.kolbu.com/mvix/way/
Note that the URL only works when my Mvix is running. I've also cordoned off a few select areas, typically external shares and a few /proc files that cause the server to hang if browsed. Not sure if I got all the /proc files tho, so don't expect too much.

Unfortunately it seems that the bug is coded into the code and that's why it is cannot be fixed on linux kernel level, so there can't be hacked - if I understand well
You can open a ticket!
When you create a new ticket You have to choose the "non-US customer option"!
So please open a ticket in this way to force them to fix this, there are quite amount of user with this bug, so I can't believe this "non-awareness" as well...
Specially, that I think the only thing they would need to do is to change back the username with which 760HD is trying to connect to shares from "root" to "guest".
It would take about maximum 5 minutes development....
It is an other issue, that they should develop: to be able to fill in custom username/password to connect, not with this ridiculous "guest" thing.
I am really disappointed by this.....

elister 04-27-07, 11:50 AM Horrible device. Had it for two days, upgraded the firmware twice. Couldn't ever get my .TS files to stream properly over a wired gigabit network. Playback was choppy and would not output digital 5.1.
Everything else worked fine (480p/720p XViD files, DVD & MPEG2).
Had to return the device for a refund. This product needs alot of work.
hal-9000 04-27-07, 11:07 PM Regarding some people's comments about not reading IFO files correctly, I've found, much by accident that if you try to play an IFO file and it gives you an error, just to try it again and it almost always works. I typically use the PLAY button to do this, not sure if it's any different that route.
Eric
I had trouble using the play button with IFO files, however the enter button works just fine, takes you right to the dvd root menu.
hal-9000 04-27-07, 11:10 PM Has anyone tried plugging in an external HD DVD or Blu Ray USB drive??????
Using Vista Home Premium and followed the
knowledgebase in MvixUSA
"How do I enable Windows Vista Basic file sharing for the MX-760HD?"
"How do I Configure Sharing and Discovery in Windows Vista Home Basic or Premium?"
I have shared a folder on my PC, can see the folder on the MX-760HD on the TV, but when trying to access the shared folder I got a message sayin "Access deny".
Although the folder is shared for "Everyone" on the PC.
Not usin the Vista firewall, since I use the firewall in my Linksys router
The firmware I use is v1.1.25
Pls help me.
Thanks in advance.
I placed the .sub and .idx file in the same directory as the .avi file. It plays fine with the subs displayed when using any video player on my computer. IT WILL NOT DISPLAY THE SUBTITLES WHEN WATCHING WITH MY MX760HD. So how do i get it to display the subtitles?

I had trouble with .sub as well, convert it to .srt, it is working at least.
dannyv@cybernex. 05-01-07, 12:56 PM Hi all,
I just received my mx-760hd yesterday and I must say I am very disappointed with it. I can not play .ts HD streams without constant freezing and audio dropouts. This happens even when I copy these files to the internal HD. I opened a ticket with technical support the content of which follows.
"I recently received the mx-760hd and am very disapointed in this product. I purchased it spicifically to play .ts high definition streams which stream at about 15 - 17mbps. Because of the large file size (average 7-10 gig) I opted to install an internal hard drive in the unit and play it from the drive and not stream across the network. The result when playing it from the internal hard drive is constant picture freezing and audio dropouts. I've searched the many forums including the AVSforum and it seems no one can play these .TS streams. It seems that everyone that has tried has the same problems. I do know it is not a spicific problem with my unit or my setup. I find it odd that you would sell a product that you advertize as able to play high defination .TS streams when in fact the product does not. I've tried playing the streams with both the originally shipped firmware 1.1.17 and the beta firmware 1.1.26 and the results are the same.
The big question is, Are your engineers looking into this problem and when will you have a solution."
Lets see what there responce is.
gregsmith 05-02-07, 04:29 AM Hi all,
Just spotted this PVR addon from tvix - http://www.kjglobal.co.uk/acatalog/T530.html
I really hope that mvix follow suit and produce an addon for the 760hd!!

FAT32, or ext3 in you have a recent firmware image. The actual formatting is explained in the manual and basically involves attaching the Mvix to a PC through USB and formatting the drive using normal Windows tools.

I've made a firmware image with working ftpd support, based on the 1.1.26 final firmware available on the Korean Unicorn website. Absolutely no idea on the differences between the 1.1.26 beta and the final, as I do not speak Korean. You can grab it at http://www.kolbu.com/mvix/mvix-1.1.26-olav.pkg
Username/password for both ftp and telnet login is root/olav. Most of the directory structure is read only, this being firmware, so to upload you need an internal hard drive. This typically gets mounted on /tmp/ide/part1, so you need to cd there before you can put files using ftp.
Update: Turns out the ftp server falls over if you transfer more than a couple of KB to it. So it's useless for now, but I'll see what I can do.
The firmware also starts a web server on your Mvix, just for the fun of it.
Absolutely no warranties, use at your own risk. See http://www.kolbu.com/mvix-mx-760hd-media-player/de-bricking-your-mvix-mx-760hd/ for help if you manage to brick your player.

Hi Zvi7799
Unfortunately there's no nice way of sharing the mvix drive on the network just yet, but we and the mvix team are working on it! You can install some community firmware that has ftp access but it's still a bit flaky at the moment.

I'm curious... on your ftp test setup, how is your drive formatted? Ext3, FAT32 or NTFS?
Squished Squirre 05-08-07, 01:21 PM Interesting news for Mac users with a MVIX: NTFS Write support has finally become available so that we can write directly to the MVIX. Dunno how much I trust it yet, I think I'll let it bake for a bit before I try it.

Hi Squished Squirre,
I reformatted my HD to ext3 once v1.1.25 came out, so that's how I can use ftp. I think FAT would also be read-write but I haven't tried it (maybe someone could confirm/deny?)
The NTFS write support for Mac will allow you to copy files to the HD using the USB connection. It won't allow the actual player to write to NTFS.
They must be working on integrating NTFS write support into the firmware at the moment - it's the only thing I can think of that would be slowing down the release of official FTP or Samba firmware... because many of the existing owners would have all their content on NTFS format disks, they can't really turn around and expect everyone to reformat to ext3 (losing all the content) to support Samba.

I had it in my head that 1.1.25 had the beginnings of NTFS write support, so I was curious if that was the reason the ftpd was crapping out. I should have assumed you would have reformatted to ext3.
I know the MacFUSE NTFS driver has nothing to do with your project, I was just shocked that the whole userspace MacFUSE thing had somehow slipped past me, especially the part about write support in the current versions (and the caching patches to make performance useable.)
I wonder if mvix needs to read up on the caching patches needed to get performance that doesn't... well... suck.
I agree, I think they are holding NAS up because they shot themselves in the foot for allowing NTFS to begin with. Sounds like some manager who didn't know a filesystem from a toilet brush demanded it because it was hip, not knowing that it would cause all kinds of headaches later.
I guess I can't complain. I formatted NTFS because my first attempt at FAT32 cratered for some reason, and I assumed it was due to improper FAT32 large volume support in the original (December) firmware.

Hi traukostar,
It is the chipset I'm afraid - the chip doesn't support the h264 format. There is a pin-compatible chip out there that does, but we're only speculating that it would be possible to switch them.
Firmware can't help us here - even if there was a software decoder, the CPU wouldn't be fast enough...

dannyv@cybernex. 05-15-07, 01:08 PM New firmware is available that now supports NDAS. its version 1.1.27 available at http://www.mvixusa.com/support/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=24.
perpetual98 05-15-07, 02:25 PM How in the heck am I supposed to know my order number if I ordered this thing last year? Looks like you need to register with a third-party to be able to get NDAS and they'll email you a code within 72 hours? I'm not holding my breath that this is going to work terribly well.
They do make it hard to get support and order this "free" software. You would think they would keep track of all serial numbers of the product they received so we did not have to do their work.

Think yourself lucky, at least you will probably get your keys. As for those of us non-US/Canadian customers, I think we have stuff all chance of getting NDAS working as they clearly state
NOTE: This form is for current U.S./Canadian users of the Mvix MX-760HD ONLY. If you have purchased your unit from outside of these countries, you may either contact your local reseller/distributors for upgrade instructions or use this form to send the information to your local distributor for processing. Mvix(USA), Inc. is not liable for ID/KEY processing for non-US customers.
gregsmith 05-16-07, 05:11 AM Same here - I got mine from kjglobal.co.uk.
I've been waiting for NDAS for ages now too! I understand that they've probably been inundated with requests for this and don't have time to develop in-house so have gone for a 3rd party solution. This is totally understandable but why did they have to choose a company that requires you to have a key to use your own hardware!! Maddening!
If anyone manages to get this going in the UK, please post and let us know.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but NDAS is patented by Ximeta, so MVix could never have rolled their own internal version. Ximeta keep the technology to themselves by requiring the MAC address of every storage device which they then link to the ID/KEY they send out to you. In devices where NDAS is an existing feature, the KEY/ID is printed on the case. We aren't in that situation, so we need to send in the MACs.
Personally I would have much preferred if Mvix had gone with an open technology such as Samba/CIFS. This is already supported by all operating systems that matter, whereas NDAS requires an installation for Windows/Mac and is only a BETA driver in Linux (which I use). I'll be doing more work on getting a Samba or NFS server working in the Firmware when I get the chance...

Ah, excuse my ignorance. I was assuming NDAS was just another general name for network attached storage.
If this is the case it must be possible to get a key in the UK, maybe it'll just be a little harder. Really wanna get this going.

dannyv@cybernex. 05-16-07, 04:11 PM Look here for an Alternitive NDAS ID/key method
http://www.benf.org/other/rapsody/index.html
NDAS network scanner - it will list all the NDAS devices on your subnet (by waiting for 5s, during which at least 1 NDAS HELO is broadcast), and it will use the functions provided in NDASUSER.dll (supplied seperately by XiMeta, you'll have it if you Install Ximedia (TM) NDAS Software that you download from the mvix site) to generate the NDAS ID / Write key.

perpetual98 05-16-07, 06:47 PM I followed that link by dannyv and it seems to work perfect. My network attached Mvix now shows up as a local drive on my computer. Haven't tried to read or write to it though.
I've packaged up a modified version of the 1.1.27 firmware that has telnet, ftp and http running, all appearing to work fine. Ftp upload/download of very large files work fine for me in this version. No warranties or guarantees of course, and it may not work for you at all. :-) Username/password for both telnet and ftp is root/olav, and note specifically that your starting directory for ftp is /root, whereas your internal hard drive is most likely mounted around /tmp/ide/part1/. Note also that accessing some /proc entries using http will freeze the web server.

Glad to here that.
I tried it last night and the drive didn't show up at first. I had to go into device manager and assign it a drive letter then it showed up. I tried writing to it and it copied to the mvix HD but what I copied did not show up on the mvix even though it shows up on the PC. I think my 1.1.27 firmware install got screwed up. I'm going to uninstall the software and reflash the mvix then reinstall the software and see if that helps.
Perpetual98,
Please keep me informed of your further testing.
perpetual98 05-17-07, 09:23 AM I was able to move a movie folder off of my Mvix to my local PC, and it worked, but it was slower than heck. I think it took 40 minutes to move a roughtly 4GB folder. I then tried to move 3 movies over the network to the Mvix before I went to bed and it seem to have timed out over the course of the night. I couldn't get my computer to "find" the Mvix again this morning, but I had to get to work and didn't get to play with it. My Mvix was also locked up and I had to remove the power cord to get it to restart.
Maybe the "official" key will be better, but I'm not holding my breath.

My results seem about the same as yours. I tried to move an 800 meg DIVx movie and it said it would take 158 minutes. I canceled the move and tried a smaller file and the copy completed but it did not show up on the MVIX even though it showed up on the MVIX drive on the PC. One thing I noted was on the larger file it went to 50% complete very quickly then slowed to a crawl. I agree with you that I don't think the key from MVIX is going to be any better. If this is the case we better starting opening lots of tickets with their tech support people so they make it a priority.
perpetual98 05-17-07, 10:16 AM Here's the bad news. I just got my Ximeta (or whatever it's called) key from Mvix.
It's the exact same key that I got from running the ndasscan.exe file.
I'm now convinced that we're not going to see any improvement on what I ran across last night. Maybe the next firmware release..... lol

The more people report problems the faster we will see a fix. I'm sure they want it working as much as we do because they are paying the license fees for each key.

haxplore 05-17-07, 02:37 PM I updated my player with olav's fw. I could copy files over ftp to the internal ext2 drive and to an usb(fat32) drive. I got about 800kb/sec (~12min for a 700MB file) speed over wifi with wpa, even whilst watching videos or listening to mp3s. I copied several GBs without any major slow down, glitch or timeout.
Well starting to watch a 720p wmv file from the usb drive while copying to the internal drive made the speed to drop below 400k, but the video played fine and speed went up again after I stopped the video.
Not the fastest way, but so far the most convenient one for me. Smashing work Olav, thanks!

Hi there
Your internal drive is most likely formatted using NTFS. The Linux-kernel on the box does not have NTFS write support at all. You either have to reformat using a bunch of small FAT32 partitions or find a Linux-server and use that to format the drive as EXT2/EXT3. There may or may not exist a Windows-application that will do that for you, I have not checked. (Your USB-stick uses FAT, not NTFS, so it works.)
I'm playing around with fdisk and mke2fs on the Mvix now, to see if can do the partitioning and formatting without the need of a Linux box.
Olav
k4nickel 05-17-07, 06:03 PM thank you very much, Olav! I'll try and get it formatted with EXT2/EXT3.
Your firmware is great work, really. Thank you for that too, you made my day!
edit: It's working now - I'm uploading via WLAN at around 2 Mbyte/sec.
sfowler2 05-17-07, 06:57 PM Currently running 1.1.26 beta. Downloaded the 1.1.27 zip file from mvix last night. Unzipped and transferred it to my internal hdd on the mvix. Sent a ticket to mvix and I'll wait to see what they have to say.
traukostar 05-18-07, 03:29 AM I got my Mvix 760HD, 3 weeks ago, I have been playing more than 60 different movies and episodes from tv shows.
First Week I was connected to my home network throw cable, playing AVI & MPEG movies from 300 mb to 1.2GB (codecs: xvid & divx only),
I didnt notice any problems.
2nd week I installed an Internal 400gb HDD (Samsung).
I start watching .TS and .AVI files larger than 3 GB. Then I begin to noticed some loss of frames and choppy episodes, specially in the change of scenes or with too much action.
I have read all the messages from this post, and only 3 people ask about this, without ANY answer or solution.
This subject I beleive is very important, because .avi files of only 700mb have this issue too.
.ts files bigger than 3GB are the most jumpy.
But with .avi files encoded in Xvid Mpeg4 codec lower than 700mb??? wtf?
For example:
- 24 s06e22 hr hdtv xvid-nbs (700mb, 960x544)
- Lost 319 hr hdtv xvid-tvff (700mb, 960x528)
The choppy parts in this two examples are insignificant compared with the .TS files, but still its a BIG issue.
This is a preview, only 26 mb, play this on your mvix and put a lot of attention with the change of scenes, some miliseconds of lag!
http://rapidshare.com/files/31950554/Lost_choppy_example.rar
I wonder also if the bitrate of this two episode have something to do.....This example I repeat its insignificant, but the .avi episode size is only 700mb....
Hope someone have an answer, I have tried playing this episode throw another HD, pendrives and Network with the same results.
Sorry for my english, i speak spanish
Thanks!

haxplore 05-18-07, 04:39 PM @traukostar
Hi, I haven't got any TS or avi files bigger than 3GB, so I cannot comment on that. Anyway, your lost episode example played fine (from usb/fat32). BTW, I am on fw version 1.1.27, and the player is connected to a 30" standard tv only.
Looking at it several times on my laptop and with the player I can see that it is not as smooth on the player, but I still do not find it irritating. Maybe you experience more glitches on your player, maybe my eyes are not as good as yours. ;)
HD rips (960x5xx) - like your example - seem to be encoded with bitrates around 3500kbps. The bitrate of "standard" :) dvd rip avi files is around 1000kbps. Huge difference and may well be the problem. Although, a 720p wmv file encoded with 6200kbps plays perfectly.
As far as I know the fw has to read the data from file (almost 4x as many in case of HD rips), split audio and video and feed it to the processor. Now, whether it is the hardware that cannot handle high-res xvid or the fw has bugs, I do not know. I am not an expert, but somebody might help out (or correct me).
gregsmith 05-20-07, 09:17 AM Thanks to those that have helped supply with NDAS scanners etc.. I'd like to confirm that I've now got my NDAS working in the UK too.
Word of warning, the NDAS Key scanner only works on XP, not on vista (wrong version of packet sniffer gets installed).
It's slow, but it sure beats lugging the Mvix upstairs every time I have a new video!
Let's hope we can get a more open alternative running in the future that doesn't require all this proprietary rubbish.
Screech 05-22-07, 10:58 AM I didn't read all 17 pages, sorry. I got mine for Christmas and really have not messed with it until last night due to a wireless networking problem with unit. My SSID contains an "_" and the MX-760HD would not allow me to enter that character, not even with a keyboard, so I could never network it. Yesterday I finally got a WET54G for my computer workstation and moved the old WET11 and a hub/switch to the entertainment center so my entertainment devices (PS2, xBox, MX-760HD, PS3 has its own wireless that worked with my existing network) connected to the network. Today I noticed the new firmware and that it mentions adding "_" to the keys, going to test if this also adds "_" support to the SSID tonight if I have time to update the firmware to 1.1.27.
I will say the upscaling to 1080p looks good, I've not compared to others though, so my experience is very limited. I just have a little 24" computer monitor (BenQ FP241W with the 1:1 firmware update) on my entertainment center. With the help of a HD component switch box (some Score System Selector Pro 2.0 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=640379) thing I found at GameStop, I like it due to the IR remote control, so my Pronto and MX-3000 files where updated to support it. Just wish that all of the inputs supported digital audio, not just the first 3) I have the xBox, PS2, D-Theater VCR using the component input, the PS3 is HDMI, the MX-760HD is DVI, the current sat is still using S-video. Fall/Winter I plan for a new receiver with more inputs, internal upscaling and 7.1.
Maybe this week I will figure out what this NDAS feature they are all excited about is for.
maltice 05-22-07, 01:11 PM Well I installed NDAS the other day. I would have to say, I wish it was a tad faster but it works like a charm.
To really test the thing out, I used Procoder and took a 1080p .ts movie and reencoded as 720p mpeg2. The source file and the destination file were on the mvix. I then watched an HD planet earth file while I did this and there wasn't even a hiccup. I was really impressed that it worked so well. I can transfer about 5 gigs over NDAS in about 20 mins.
On another note I HIGHLY recommend that any file that you have that stutters or skips or anything and you downloaded it from somewhere, Re-Encode it!
The 1080p .ts file i had skipped and jumped and kicked out at random times so I re-encoded with Procoder in to 720p HD (i would have done 1080p but my tv is 1080i) and once re-encoded the file is perfect. The MPEG2 file is about 30GB and plays fine.
So anyone who is having problems with particular files, try encoding them with a nice encoding program and then try it, I have come to the conclusion that 85% of my problems with files is that it was probably made witha crappy program or it got messed up somewhere along the line. Get a decent encoding program and try rencoding stuff and most of your probs go away.
Oh, and also, the GOTO button riules!! How did it take me 3 months to realize I had that button? Ha!

Screech 05-24-07, 10:36 PM Finally tested and it appears that the "_" fix for the key also fixes it in the SSID.
Is there a list of drives that are supported internally somewhere? I tried a 500G Maxtor drive, but only ~126G was detected.
Drive Info:
Maxtor (Maxtor Basics ATA/100 Internal Hard Drive Kit)
DiamondMax 20
Buffer Size: 16MB

This is not a problem with the mx-760HD it's a known issue with windows 2000 and windows xp with sp1. The problem is you most likely formated the drive using a PC running one of the above operating systems that does not have 48-bit LBA support enabled.
Refer to the microsoft articles below to correct the problem
For windows 2000

For windows xp with sp1

Screech 05-25-07, 05:18 PM All of my PCs/laptops are running Win XP Pro SP2. All had a newer vertion the mentioned atapi.sys file version and the laptop already had the mentioned registry entry. The way I read the KB article is that the registy entry is ignored on SP2.
Also, I have not formated the drive as nothing is seeing the total size as more than 130G. I wanted to setup the partitions before I format it, but nothing I've tried is showing the full size of the drive. My main system's Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboards that is running a 250G SATA drive on the Intel chipset only sees this Maxtor as 137G on either the Intel or Promise chipsets. I didn't see the reason to let windows load when it was on the Promise controller as the BIOS for the controller was only showing it as 137G. I've put the drive in the MX-760HD and used USB and still had this problem, I put it in my Maxtor EXT 1394/USB2.0 case that runs 160G drive without issue tried both 1394 connection and USB and still only see ~130G of the 500G drive. I'll try a few more things this weekend.
maltice 05-25-07, 05:42 PM dang man, sounds like the company put the wrong label on the drive and really gave you a 130 GB drive. Keep us updated I would love to hear how this turns out.

I don't think so. I've heard of this same problem with formatting a drive in an external USB/firewire case, and it was a bitch to get it to reformat back to its full capacity.

Well that is just it, I didn't even get to the steps of adjusting the partitions or formats as it was showing 0% unallocated space with one 137GB partition (formated Fat32 IIRC) so I didn't even attempt to mess with the partitions. And since SeaGate owns Maxtor I was on the phone with SeaGate tech support for 5-6 hours and it ended up being a bad drive. I exchanged it at my place of purchase since I got it just last week and the new one popped in and saw all 500GB right from the get-go as I had expected the first to do.
The tools from Seagate's tech support would not work on the drive to adjust the LBA size for some reason either, tech said the seagate tools are not up-to-date enough to adjust the Maxtor drive, even though the drive was clearly labeled as being made by SeaGate. Seems like the Seagate-Maxtor merger is not going too smoothly on the tech front to me.
500GB + MX-760HD = happy me!!
Have you tried to set the global option
map to guest = Bad Password
in your smb.conf? I've tried it today for the first time and I finally got it working with
security = user
Hope this helps ;D
haxplore 05-31-07, 05:43 PM Hi all,
I had a few private messages here in my inbox. Sorry for not answering them. I just did not realize before that this feature exists. :)
Cheers,

Serotonin 06-07-07, 02:15 AM Hey guys just signed up to the forums to ask a few questions, i read the thread but i couldn't find the answers i was looking for.
I only want to use the Ethernet port to stream movies/shows/music from my pc to my tv, i wont be installing a harddrive. From what i have read people keep complaining about the video skipping or locking up for a few seconds every 20 seconds? With the latest firmware are all these problems fixed?
Also i cant find any information about plugging it into a HDTV/Receiver. I know once i purchase it there will obviously be an instruction manual is there any chance to download it before hand so i can look at the setup. I have a HDTV and a receiver that upscales to highdef so would i be best to run it through the receiver or directly into the hdtv? Will it even work if i plug it into the receiver?
k4nickel 06-07-07, 03:15 AM haxplore: 2 MB/s is the average upload rate with WPA encryption. I could even watch a movie at the same time and keep up that rate.
However, I have encountered another problem. I have around 200 mp3s in one folder; whenever i hit the "play" button on the remote control, the mvix just crashes (black screen, no sound). Playing a single mp3 with the OK button works just fine.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

I use ethernet to stream DVD, DVD ISO, DIVX, MP4, MP3, AVI and never had a problem with stalling, audio dropout or skipping. I run the latest firmware 1.1.27. There have been reports of this but mostly with wireless networks. It basically plays anything over my ethernet 100mbt wired network that I stream to it. The only execption is HD content (.ts) which is usually about 7 - 15 gigs in size with a resolution of 1920 x 1280. With this content I do get some audio dropout and freezing both over the network and from the mvix internal hard drive. FF/RWD is a bit of a mess above 8x but mvix knows about it. The audio playlist feature is about as useful as tits on a bull but hopfully mvix will improve on it. It does have its disappointments but overall it is a great product. Its still very new and they do release firmware on a regular basis and the firmware is open source so the mvix user community is also working on improvments. I'm sure in the coming months you will see nice enhancements.
As far as connecting the mvix to your home theater system its really a matter of personal choice. The mvix has HDMI as well as component (RGB) and digital fiber/coax audio output so there are a million posibilities as far as hookup goes. I myself use component to my HDTV and digital optical to my receiver and am very happy with the results.
You can download the owners manual from here.

kalagan_75 06-11-07, 07:57 AM Hi to everybody.
I have a problem with my MX-760HD (original FW 1.1.27) and a Hitachi 500GB HDD inside it.
When I turn on the device, the media center doesn't recognize the internal HDD. I also tried to refresh several time but nothing happens.
If I turn off the media center and quickly turn it on again, I can see the HDD icon and fully use the disk.
I think the problem happens because the internal HDD need a while to spin up the platters before to be fully ready and the media center doesn't wait enough before to scan the prepherials connected to it.
In fact if I turn off and quicly turn on (before the HDD spin down the platters) the problem disappers.
There is a workaround to this behaviour?
Thank you in advance

Thats a very odd problem.
First check your connections to the hard drive.
It sounds like the MVIX is trying to read the drive before it has a chance to spin up but a refresh should re-read and recognize it. It sounds more like a hardware problem with either the mvix or the hard drive. If you have another hard drive around I would try that and see if the problem still exists. If the problem goes away with the new drive then it most likely is the drive, if it still exist then the MVIX could be bad.
When you first turn it on put your ear up to the MVIX and see if you hear the hard drive start. If it don't start on initial power-up but starts on a quick power jogging then it could be the HD controller in the MVIX. But to confirm this you should try another drive if you have an old one laying around.
